Hero Hockey India League 2024-25: Tamil Nadu Dragons Edge Hyderabad Toofans After Nail Biting Penalty Shootout
The Tamil Nadu Dragons secured a 4-3 penalty shootout win against the Hyderabad Toofans after a 2-2 draw in their Hero Hockey India League match on Thursday.
The Tamil Nadu Dragons triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shootout after their Men's Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 Pool B match with the Hyderabad Toofans ended in a 2-2 draw at the Birsa Munda stadium in Rourkela on Thursday. Blake Govers (4’) and Jip Janssen (37’) scored for the Dragons, while Tim Brand (3’) and Maico Casella (59’) netted for the Toofans.

Fast Start

The match kicked off with both teams finding the net early on. The Toofans gained the lead in the 3rd minute when Rajinder Singh passed the ball to Tim Brand, who deflected it past Tamil Nadu’s David Harte. However, the Dragons responded swiftly. In the 4th minute, Blake Govers fired a shot past Vikas Dahiya, leveling the score at 1-1.

Chances and Saves

As the match progressed, both teams created several scoring opportunities. In the 11th minute, the Toofans won the first penalty corner of the match. Yet, David Harte displayed excellent reflexes, saving Gonzalo Peillat’s drag flick. A few minutes later, Govers had a chance to give the Dragons the lead, but Bikramjit Singh made a crucial save to keep the score even.

Dragons Lead

The Dragons seized the lead in the 37th minute after a penalty corner. Jip Janssen unleashed a powerful drag flick, which found the back of the net, giving the Dragons a 2-1 advantage. Despite the Toofans’ efforts to respond, they faced a solid defense from Harte, who made several important saves. For instance, in the 42nd minute, Harte stopped three consecutive penalty corners, denying the Toofans a chance to equalize.

Toofans Equalize

In the 59th minute, the Toofans finally found the equalizer. Maico Casella’s drag flick took a slight deflection off Amit Rohidas' stick, sending it past Harte into the net, tying the game at 2-2. Both teams pushed hard for a winner, but the game went into a penalty shootout.

Shootout Drama

The penalty shootout saw both goalkeepers in top form. Bikramjit Singh saved attempts from Govers, Mohammed Raheel, and Moritz Ludwig, while David Harte blocked shots from Shilanand Lakra, Arshdeep Singh, Casella, and Zachary Wallace. Ultimately, the Dragons emerged victorious with a 4-3 win in the shootout. Looking ahead, the Women’s Hero Hockey India League will feature a match between JSW Soorma Hockey Club and Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers at 6:00 PM IST on January 24, followed by the Men’s match between Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers and Vedanta Kalinga Lancers at 8:15 PM IST.
