Elon Musk claims that a massive cyberattack caused the recent X outage. As a result, thousands of users across multiple continents could not refresh their feeds or access new content.
During an interview with Fox Business Network,
Musk stated that the attackers' IP addresses originated from Ukraine. However, cybersecurity experts quickly challenged his claim. They pointed out that hackers often disguise their real locations using advanced technology. Therefore, the attack may not have come from Ukraine at all.
X Users Struggle with Widespread Outage
The outage began on March 10, 2025, affecting both the app and the website. At its peak, the issue triggered over 40,000 user complaints, according to Downdetector.
Eventually, the number of reports started to decline. By March 11, most users had regained access, though some still experienced technical glitches.
Cyberattack or Internal Failure?
So far, experts remain uncertain about the true cause of the outage. On one hand, a cyberattack is possible, given the scale and duration of the disruption. On the other hand, X has faced internal technical challenges since Musk downsized its workforce.
As a result, a forensic investigation is necessary to determine the real cause. Meanwhile, Musk remains firm in his belief.
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,” Musk posted on X.
