An
explosion and fire at the La Chorrera Thermoelectric Power Plant caused a nationwide blackout in Panama. Officials say a technical fault in one of the generators triggered the incident. As a result, electricity has been disrupted across the country.
Firefighters Battle Flames as Power Restoration Begins
Meanwhile, firefighters are working to put out the fire. At the same time, officials assure the public that they will restore electricity gradually.
Panama’s President, Jose Raul Mulino, shared an update on social media:
“The Director of ETESA informs me that the damage was caused by a private power generator that triggered the system's protection. Service will be restored little by little. Stay calm.”
Water Supply Stops Due to Blackout
Since water treatment plants and wells rely on electricity, the power outage has disrupted water services. As a result, authorities have suspended drinking water supplies until power is restored.
However, officials confirm that staff are on-site and prepared to resume operations once power returns.
Authorities Urge Citizens to Stay Calm
Therefore, officials ask residents to remain patient as emergency teams work to fix the crisis. Meanwhile, firefighters continue their efforts to fully control the fire at the power plant.
