Myanmar’s military launched an airstrike on Saturday on a village controlled by resistance forces where at least 27 civilians have been killed and 30 injured, as reported by an opposition group and local media.
Bombs Hit Market Area
The strike happened on Friday at 3 p.m. in Let Pan Hla village, located in Singu township, 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Mandalay. According to the Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MDY-PDF), the airstrike struck a crowded market. However, Myanmar’s military has not commented on the attack.

Conflict Worsens Since 2021 Coup
Since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s government on February 1, 2021, Myanmar has faced ongoing chaos. Initially, peaceful protests erupted across the country. However, security forces responded with deadly force, pushing many civilians to take up arms. As a result, intense clashes have continued ever since.
Military Increases Airstrikes
Meanwhile, the military has intensified airstrikes on pro-democracy resistance fighters and ethnic rebel groups. These groups sometimes join forces against the army. However, they lack the weapons to defend against air attacks.
Children Among the Victims
In July last year, MDY-PDF took control of Singu. On Saturday, the group confirmed that the airstrike killed 27 people, including six children. Tragically, bombs hit the market, not a military target.
Houses Destroyed in the Blast
Additionally, MDY-PDF spokesperson Osmond reported that bombs destroyed ten houses near the market. He explained, “This airstrike was not aimed at a military target, but rather at the market area, where civilians visit daily.”
Internet and Phone Services Cut Off
Because of military control, internet and phone services remain blocked in the area. Therefore, independent sources have not been able to verify the attack.
Death Toll May Be Higher
According to Myanmar Now, an independent news outlet, the actual death toll may be higher. The report claimed that 30 people died, while seven remain in critical condition. The airstrike reportedly hit a tea shop near the market.
Civilian Casualties Rising
Most importantly, civilian deaths continue to rise. A recent report from Myanmar-based research group Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica revealed shocking statistics. Since the 2021 coup, airstrikes have killed 2,224 civilians and injured 3,466 in 4,157 attacks.
