‘Not the Time for War’: PM Modi’s Plea to Putin and Zelensky on Lex Fridman Podcast
PM Modi urges Russia and Ukraine to engage in direct talks, emphasizing diplomacy as the only path to lasting peace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that diplomacy is the only way to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking on the Lex Fridman podcast, he said military victories would not bring lasting peace. Therefore, he urged Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold direct talks.

Push for Direct Negotiations

PM Modi highlighted his strong ties with both nations. As a result, he positioned himself as a leader who could speak openly with both sides. "I have a close relationship with Russia and Ukraine alike," PM Modi stated. "I can sit with President Putin and say that this is not the time for war. And I can also tell President Zelensky, in a friendly way, that regardless of how many people stand with you in the world, there will never be a resolution on the battlefield." Furthermore, he warned Ukraine against relying only on its allies. He said real progress depends on direct discussions between both nations. "Ukraine may hold countless discussions with their allies, but it will bear no fruit. Discussions must include both parties instead," he said. He stressed that only negotiations could bring peace.

Global Impact

PM Modi pointed out how the war has affected the world, especially the Global South. "There has been a lot of suffering. Even the Global South has suffered. The world has been grappling with a food, fuel, and fertilizer crisis. So, the global community should unite in the pursuit of peace." Moreover, his words align with global efforts to mediate peace and address the humanitarian and economic crisis.

War’s Devastation

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Consequently, the war has killed and injured hundreds of thousands. Millions have fled their homes. Many towns now lie in ruins. The conflict has worsened tensions between Moscow and the West. On Tuesday, the United States agreed to resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This decision followed Kyiv’s support for Washington's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. On Thursday, President Putin conditionally supported the truce. However, he said fighting must continue until key issues are resolved.

Stalemate in Peace Talks

Putin has said he is open to peace talks but insists Ukraine must not seek NATO membership. Additionally, he demands that Russia keep all territories it has claimed in Ukraine, even those it does not fully control. The war has been costly for Russia. U.S. intelligence estimated in 2023 that over 100,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded. Likewise, Russia's economy has suffered due to record defense spending and severe Western sanctions. Ukraine has also suffered major losses. Over 100,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or injured, according to leaked U.S. intelligence reports. Meanwhile, the nation’s economy is in ruins. One-fifth of its land is under Russian occupation. Despite receiving over $260 billion in Western aid, Ukraine has not been able to push back Russian forces. Given these challenges, PM Modi believes diplomacy is the only way forward. As world powers work toward peace, his call for direct negotiations highlights the urgency of ending the war.
