Selena Gomez recently opened up about online criticism of her weight. She admitted that constant negative comments have made her feel “a tad bitter.”
“Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad and — not even sad because, no, I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter, and I feel really guilty for saying that, but it’s true,” she said on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast. She appeared alongside her fiancé, Benny Blanco.
Struggles with Health and Body Image
In 2013, doctors diagnosed Gomez with lupus. Since then, she has been taking medication to manage the disease. However, in 2023, she revealed on TikTok that the medication causes weight gain.
Although she tries to avoid online comments, she sometimes can’t help but see them. “There’s just so many different things that come up in my face, that I can’t help but see … I fall victim to looking at things,” she admitted. “I’m human, so of course sometimes I read things.”
Taking a Step Back from Social Media
To protect her mental health, Selena Gomez avoids social media apps. She believes this helps her stay away from negativity.
“But I do, most of the time, ignore most of everything. I don’t have anything on my phone at the moment. So, there are ways to combat it,” she explained. “I understand the power of what social media is. It’s just tricky.”
Meanwhile, Blanco has a different approach. He chooses not to engage with online hate. Supporting Gomez, he added, “There’s always going to be someone trying to bring you down. Hating is free. So people are going to be hating all over the world.”
Facing Unfair Judgment
Furthermore, Selena Gomez pointed out the unfair ways people judge her. She shared that some criticize her for not being “white enough” or “Mexican enough.”
“It’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough … nobody cares about those kind of things with men,” she said.
In the end, Gomez’s interview shed light on the harsh reality of public scrutiny. Despite the negativity, she continues to focus on her well-being.
