Trump’s 1988 Oprah Interview Resurfaces Amid New Tariff War
Trump’s 1988 interview resurfaces as he imposes new tariffs, demanding allies “pay their fair share.”

An old interview of US President Donald Trump is making rounds on the internet after his latest decision to impose "reciprocal tariffs" on trade partners. Back in 1988, during a conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Trump insisted that American allies should "pay their fair share."

Trump Criticizes Unfair Trade Practices

In the interview, Trump accused foreign countries of exploiting the US economy. He specifically mentioned Japan and Kuwait, arguing that they benefited from America while blocking American businesses.

“They knock the hell out of our companies,” he stated.

Japan Limits US Trade Opportunities

Furthermore, Trump claimed that Japan made it nearly impossible for US manufacturers to sell their products. Although Japan freely sold its goods in America, it, in turn, restricted US exports.

“If you ever go to Japan right now and try to sell something, forget about it. It’s almost impossible,” he emphasized.

Kuwait Should Contribute More

Similarly, Trump criticized Kuwait for enjoying wealth while not contributing to the US economy. He argued that since America helped secure Kuwait’s oil trade, the country should give the US 25% of its profits.

“The poorest person in Kuwait, they live like kings, and yet they’re not paying,” he pointed out.

Trump’s New Tariff Policy

As a result, on Wednesday (Thursday IST), Trump announced new tariffs on US trade partners. He imposed a 10% tax on most imports and a 27% tariff on India. Additionally, he accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "not treating us right."
