IPL 2025: Punjab Kings Edge Out CSK in Last-Over Thriller in Chennai
Punjab Kings clinched a thrilling last-over win against Chennai Super Kings, chasing down 190 with standout performances from Chahal, Iyer, and Prabhsimran.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) edged past Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets in the 49th match of IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With blazing knocks from Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis, Chennai Super Kings looked set to cross the 200-run mark. However, Yuzvendra Chahal turned the game around by taking 4 wickets, including a hat-trick in the 19th over, and restricted CSK to 190.

In response, Punjab Kings chased down the target with the help of aggressive innings from Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh. Although Khaleel Ahmed created last-over drama by taking a wicket when the scores were level, Marco Jansen sealed the win for PBKS with a boundary on the fourth ball.

CSK’s Top Order Crumbles Early

Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bowl first. Ayush Mhatre and Shaik Rasheed opened the innings for CSK, facing Arshdeep Singh in the first over. Arshdeep bowled a tight first over, conceding just three runs. Mhatre found a boundary in the second over, but Rasheed showed aggression in the third with a four and a six before falling to Arshdeep on the next ball. He managed 11 off 12. At the end of the third over, CSK stood at 22/1.

In the next over, Marco Jansen dismissed Mhatre for 7. Ravindra Jadeja joined Sam Curran at the crease. Curran struck a boundary, but CSK could only manage six runs in the fourth over. Jadeja got going with a boundary in the fifth over, while Harpreet Brar faced Jadeja’s counterattack in the sixth. Jadeja hit three consecutive boundaries before Brar removed him for 17. After six overs, CSK reached 48/3, with Curran on 8 and Dewald Brewis yet to score.

Curran and Brewis Steady the Innings

Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a tidy seventh over, giving away seven runs. Curran then launched Brar for a six in the eighth over. CSK climbed to 64/3. In the ninth, Curran hit back-to-back boundaries, and Brewis smashed a six as CSK picked up 16 runs from the over. Brewis added another boundary in the 10th over bowled by Omarzai. At the halfway mark, CSK were 89/3 with Curran on 29 and Brewis on 20.

CSK's Middle-Order Builds Momentum

Suryansh Shedge kept things tight in the 11th over, but Curran broke free with a boundary off Omarzai in the 12th. That hit brought up CSK’s 100 and the 50-run stand between Curran and Brewis. CSK stood at 108/3 after 12. Curran continued to lead in the 13th and 14th overs with boundaries alongside Brewis. However, Omarzai struck in the 15th over, removing Brewis for 32. Chahal then dismissed Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad in successive deliveries to complete his hat-trick. He gave away just eight runs and picked up four wickets in the over. CSK slumped to 186/9.

In the final over, Arshdeep bowled again. Dube hit a boundary but was dismissed next ball for 6. CSK finished with 190 in 19.2 overs.

Punjab Kings Begin the Chase Confidently

Chasing 191, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh opened for Punjab Kings. Priyansh struck two boundaries in the first over bowled by Khaleel Ahmed. He continued his form with another boundary in the second over by Kamboj. Prabhsimran joined in with a boundary in the third. PBKS reached 24/0 after 3 overs.

Prabhsimran smashed a six and a four in the fourth over. In the fifth, Priyansh hit two boundaries before falling for 23. PBKS were 45/1. Shreyas Iyer joined Prabhsimran, and the duo guided Punjab to 51/1 at the end of the powerplay.

Prabhsimran completed his fifty in 31 balls with a six and a four in the 11th over bowled by Pathirana. PBKS crossed the 100-run mark in the same over. Curran kept it tight in the 12th, but Noor Ahmad struck in the 13th, removing Prabhsimran for 54. PBKS were 116/2.

Player of the Match: Shreyas Iyer

Ayush Mhatre and Shaik Rasheed provided a steady start but failed to capitalize. Both players have potential and need more time to deliver consistent results. A major positive for CSK in today’s match was the innings played by Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis. The way they added momentum and stability to the CSK innings was exactly what the team had been missing in previous games. However, CSK ended up 20–30 runs short, mainly due to Yuzvendra Chahal’s brilliant hat-trick. The over in which he took four wickets proved to be the turning point.

Punjab Kings began the chase with confidence. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh gave them the perfect start. Then, Shreyas Iyer built a solid partnership with Prabhsimran and took Punjab Kings closer to victory. Despite the late drama in the final over, Punjab Kings held their nerve and won the match.
