Shubman Gill to Lead India in Test Series Against England, Pant Named Vice-Captain
Shubman Gill takes over as India’s new Test captain with Rishabh Pant as vice-captain for the England series, marking a fresh era after Rohit and Kohli’s retirement.

India has entered a new era in Test cricket. The selectors have named young opener Shubman Gill as the new captain for the upcoming five-match Test series in England. Rishabh Pant, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, will serve as his deputy.

Leadership Shift After Rohit and Kohli’s Retirement

The change comes after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently retired from Test cricket. Their exit left fans wondering who would step up to lead the side. Several names, including KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, were in the discussion. However, the selectors chose to place their faith in Gill’s youth and potential.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision during a press briefing. He said, "Last year or so we have looked at Shubman (for leadership). We are hopeful he is the guy who is going (to take the team forward). It is a high pressure job but he is a terrific player. We wish him all the best."

Sai Sudharsan Gets First Test Call-Up

One of the key highlights of the squad announcement was the inclusion of B. Sai Sudharsan. The left-handed batter has received his maiden Test call-up, a reward for his impressive performances in domestic and India A matches.

Another notable addition is Karun Nair, who makes a return to the national side after seven years. His comeback was expected given his recent form.

Shami Left Out Due to Fitness Concerns

Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has been left out of the squad. Agarkar confirmed that the bowler is not fully fit to endure the demands of a long Test series. "His workload is not where it needs to be. We were hoping he will be available but it is unfortunate. At the moment he is not dully fit,” Agarkar said.

Sarfaraz and Harshit Miss Out

Sarfaraz Khan and Harshit Rana, who were part of the India squad for the Australia tour earlier this year, did not find a place in the current selection.
