A South Korean Navy plane crashed near Pohang on Thursday, May 29, according to fire officials quoted by Yonhap news agency. Authorities confirmed that four people were on board at the time of the crash.
Crash Occurred in the Afternoon
According to officials, the crash happened around 1:50 p.m. local time. They told Reuters that the aircraft was a navy patrol plane.
Soon after, eyewitnesses saw smoke rising from the mountains. As reported by Yonhap, the smoke came from the area where the plane went down.
Navy Confirms Aircraft Type
Shortly after the incident, the South Korean Navy released a statement. It confirmed, "A P-3 patrol aircraft crashed in Pohang this afternoon."
Meanwhile, authorities have not confirmed if there are any survivors. The Navy stated, "We are probing the reason of the crash and working to determine the status of the four people."
Emergency Teams Respond Quickly
As soon as locals reported the explosion, rescue workers and fire trucks rushed to the area. An emergency official told the Associated Press that residents had heard a loud bang after the crash.
Police Confirm the Incident
Furthermore, Pohang’s Nambu Police Station confirmed the crash of a navy patrol plane. However, officers said they did not yet have information about deaths or injuries.
