A man carried out a mass stabbing at the Union Gospel Mission men's shelter in Salem, Oregon on Sunday evening. The shelter is located in the 700 block of Commercial Street Northeast. He injured at least 11 people in the attack. Police arrested the suspect on the spot and confirmed that all victims are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
Police Confirm Injuries and Ongoing Probe
The Salem Police Department issued a statement regarding the incident. “11 victims were transported to Salem Health for medical treatment, each with varying types of injuries. Their status at present is unknown.” “The male suspect in the incident is in custody.”
As the investigation continues, police have not released more details. “No further information is available for release as detectives are on scene now investigating the incident,” the department added.
Roads Closed and Traffic Diverted
Due to the investigation, police have shut down Southbound Commercial Street at its intersection with Northeast D Street. They are redirecting traffic west on D Street to Northeast Front Street.
The department also updated the public through X (formerly Twitter), “Police activity in downtown #salemoregon on the investigation of a stabbing incident w/mult victims transpx for care. The suspect is in custody. Southbound Commercial ST at D ST NE is closed, and motorists are being diverted west on D ST to Front ST NE. NFI.” Shortly after the incident, videos surfaced online. One clip shows police officers taking the suspect into custody. So far, police have not revealed the identity or motive of the attacker. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the violence.
