NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim Shares Joy of Homemade Sushi Aboard International Space Station
Astronauts on the ISS turned a simple meal into a joyful sushi celebration using creative hacks and shared supplies.

Life on the International Space Station (ISS) recently became a bit more exciting when an astronaut prepared sushi to celebrate with the crew. The dish wasn’t fancy, but it lifted everyone's spirits and highlighted how astronauts enjoy small moments in space.

The astronaut used basic ingredients available on board—rice, spam, and fish. To make it flavorful, they added a bit of gochujang (Korean chilli paste) and wasabi.

Jonny Kim Shares Sushi Moment

NASA astronaut Jonny Kim shared the moment on social media platform X. In his post, he wrote, “Space sushi isn’t quite the same as the fresh stuff on the ground, but it’s not bad! We had a crew celebration recently, and one of our crewmates expressed how much they missed sushi (as do I).”

He added, “So we collected and pitched in our personal supplies of fish, spam, and rice, coupled with a dash of gochujang and wasabi, which made for a great meal.”

Dining in Zero Gravity

Eating in space is tricky. On the ISS, astronauts use tape on their dining table with the sticky side up. This helps hold food items, cutlery, and sauces in place, stopping them from floating around due to zero gravity.

Internet Reacts to Space Sushi

People on X loved the story. Many admired the creativity and the way the astronauts shared their supplies.

One user, @Skythelimit4545, said, "Your space sushi party sounds like a blast, and that sticky-tape table hack is genius for keeping it all together in zero gravity."

Another, @terranea45, commented, “Love sushi too! You guys are the real stars of humanity.”

Some joked that they’d love to try “space sushi” themselves. Others showed interest in learning how food behaves in microgravity.
