Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Clears Senate with VP Vance’s Tie-Breaker
Trump’s major domestic policy bill narrowly passed the Senate after a tie-breaking vote, setting up a final showdown in the House before the July 4 deadline.

The Republican-led US Senate approved President Donald Trump’s major domestic policy bill early Tuesday morning. The bill, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” now moves one step closer to becoming law.

According to NBC News, the Senate passed the measure with a 51-50 vote. The tie-breaking vote came from Vice President JD Vance.

Despite Republican control, three GOP senators opposed the bill. They joined all Democrats in voting against it.

Three Republicans Vote Against the Bill

During the final vote, Senators Rand Paul (Kentucky), Thom Tillis (North Carolina), and Susan Collins (Maine) broke party lines. They stood with all 47 Democrats to oppose the bill.

After the vote, Senator Paul told reporters, “The big not so beautiful bill has passed,” as quoted by the Associated Press.

A Long, Intense Debate Before the Vote

The Senate vote followed a 24-hour overnight session, where lawmakers debated and considered numerous amendments.

GOP leaders delayed some votes to convince the remaining holdouts. They finally gathered enough support after introducing a broad amendment that addressed multiple concerns. This amendment also passed with a 51-50 vote, again needing Vice President Vance’s tie-breaker.

Next Stop: The House

The bill now returns to the House of Representatives, where Speaker Mike Johnson must guide it through. President Trump has set a July 4 deadline to get it passed.

On Monday, Johnson said, “We’re going to pass this bill one way or the other,” according to NBC News.

House-Senate Conflict Likely to Resurface

Despite the Senate’s approval, more hurdles remain. Speaker Johnson had earlier warned senators not to make major changes to the original House version. However, the Senate altered key parts, especially on Medicaid, which may reignite debates between the chambers.

A Crucial Win for Trump and GOP Leadership

This Senate vote marks a major victory for President Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. It is Thune’s most significant success since taking charge six months ago.

President Trump had called the legislation his “big, beautiful bill,” but the opposition—even within his own party—shows the difficulty in passing such a wide-reaching policy.

The nearly 940-page bill has become a central test for the Republican Party as it tries to show unity and effective control over Washington.
