Mohammed Siraj fell to a painful dismissal as the ball rolled back onto his stumps on Day 5 at Lord’s. England players Joe Root and Zak Crawley helped him up, but Siraj’s disappointment was clear. At the non-striker’s end, Ravindra Jadeja quietly removed his gloves, equally heartbroken. His face showed less emotion, yet his disappointment ran deeper.
Jadeja had kept India’s hopes alive with a determined innings. He remained unbeaten on 61 runs from 181 balls. Batting for nearly three hours with Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj, he fought hard but couldn’t save India from a 22-run loss. Some experts felt Jadeja could have taken more risks after Bumrah’s dismissal. However, the experienced all-rounder chose to stay calm and bat at his own pace under pressure. If Siraj’s unfortunate dismissal hadn’t occurred, the outcome might have been different.
Gambhir Leads Praise for Jadeja’s Effort
In the dressing room, no one questioned Jadeja’s approach. India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the players shortly after the defeat. His passionate speech proved the team’s support for Jadeja’s gritty performance.
In a video shared by BCCI titled “The MVP ft. Ravindra Jadeja”, Gambhir praised Jadeja, calling his effort “an incredible fight.” He said, “That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu was absolutely brilliant.”
Jadeja’s Calm Approach Under Pressure
India had chased a small target of 193. However, their top order collapsed quickly, losing eight wickets within 40 overs. Coming in at number 7, Jadeja played with focus and patience. He built valuable partnerships with Bumrah and Siraj. Together, they resisted England’s bowlers for more than 34 overs. In the end, India were bowled out for 170 in 74.5 overs when Siraj became the last man dismissed.
Gambhir’s words showed the team’s respect for Jadeja’s character, not just his score.
Support Staff Applaud Jadeja’s Temperament
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also praised Jadeja. Having worked with him since their days in Saurashtra, Kotak highlighted Jadeja’s ability to handle pressure. He said, “I always felt he has the ability to take pressure. With so much of experience, he normally comes with something that the team needs in any challenging conditions. Really, really valuable to the team.”
India Focus on Manchester Test
After losing at Lord’s, India now trail 1-2 in the five-match series. The next Test starts on July 23 in Manchester. India must win to keep their chances alive.
Despite the loss, Jadeja’s determined innings earned him respect from teammates and coaches alike.
