Trump Imposes Tariffs on 68 Countries, India Faces 25% Duty
Trump's new executive order imposes steep tariffs on imports from 68 countries, including India, starting August 7, in a sweeping shift in US trade policy.

US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order that will impose tariffs on a wide range of countries, including India. These tariffs will take effect on August 7.

The new order introduces “reciprocal” tariffs between 10% and 41% on goods entering the US from 68 countries and the European Union. Trump’s decision marks another bold step in his ongoing trade policy overhaul.

A top White House official confirmed on Thursday that customs and border authorities would use the time until August 7 to get ready for the changes. The official said the delay is needed to "implement" the new system smoothly.

India Among the Hardest-Hit Countries

India faces a 25% tariff, one of the highest among the listed countries. The order puts India in a tough spot as it continues to manage ongoing trade tensions with the US.

Trump’s move comes just days after he criticised India and Russia, calling them “dead economies.” His administration has taken a hardline stance against countries with what it sees as unfair trade policies.

EU and Many Other Nations Also Targeted

The order also covers the 27-member European Union. The new tariffs will vary depending on the existing US tariff rate:

  • If an EU good currently has a duty rate above 15%, it won’t face additional tariffs.

  • If the duty rate is below 15%, a new tariff will apply to make the total reach 15%.

For countries not listed specifically in the order, a default 10% tariff will be applied.

Trade Talks with Mexico Extended

While most countries face immediate uncertainty, Trump has extended trade negotiations with Mexico by 90 more days. However, many nations are still unsure how the new order will affect them.

Though the US has reached a few partial trade deals, details remain vague. As a result, manufacturers and global companies are preparing for rising costs, disrupted supply chains, and potential price hikes for consumers.

Legal Doubts Surround Tariff Expansion

Trump’s tariff push is already facing legal challenges. Appeals court judges have raised doubts about whether the White House has the authority to carry out such sweeping actions.

This move is seen as one of the most aggressive trade steps of Trump’s presidency so far.

Tariff Rates for Key Countries

  • Russia – Not listed but previously criticised

  • Brazil – 10%

  • Bangladesh – 20%
