President Murmu Extends Independence Day Greetings, Pays Tribute to Partition Victims
On the eve of Independence Day, President Murmu urged India to remember the Partition’s victims and praised the armed forces for their swift response to the Pahalgam attack.

President Droupadi Murmu greeted the nation on Thursday on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day. In her address, she spoke of the pride and unity the occasion brings and remembered the tragic events of the country’s past.

Pride in National Celebrations

“It is a matter of pride for all of us that Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated by every Indian with great enthusiasm. These are days that especially remind us of our being proud Indians,” the President said at the beginning of her speech.

She emphasized that these national days are not only about celebration but also about reflecting on India’s journey and identity.

Remembering the Horrors of Partition

Marking Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day), President Murmu urged the country to remember the suffering of millions during the 1947 Partition.

“As we look back on the past, we must not forget the pain inflicted by the Partition of the country. Today we observed Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas. Terrible violence was witnessed, and millions were forced to relocate due to Partition. Today, we pay tributes to the victims of the follies of history,” she said.

The President noted that the Partition was marked by widespread violence and displacement. She stressed that the nation continues to honor those who lost their lives or were uprooted from their homes during that time.

Condemning the Pahalgam Terror Attack

President Murmu also addressed recent national security concerns. She described the terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam as “cowardly and utterly inhuman.”

She praised the swift military response under Operation Sindoor, saying it showed the nation’s readiness to defend itself.

“Operation Sindoor showed that our armed forces are prepared to meet any eventuality when it comes to guarding nation,” the President said, highlighting the courage and determination of the security forces.

Honoring August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Every year on August 14, India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to honor those who died or were displaced during the 1947 division of the country. President Murmu’s message served as a reminder that this chapter of history should never be forgotten, even as the nation moves forward.
