Russia Restricts WhatsApp, Telegram Over Security Concerns
Russia has restricted WhatsApp and Telegram features, citing security risks, while both platforms defend their privacy and moderation policies.

Russia has begun restricting certain communication features on WhatsApp and Telegram. The move is part of its wider effort to tighten control over foreign-owned encrypted messaging apps and the country’s internet space.

Government Cites Security Threats

The country’s digital regulator accused both platforms of being misused for “sabotage and terrorist activities.” It also claimed that the companies refused to share data with law enforcement agencies, according to the Interfax news agency.

Long-Running Disputes With Tech Firms

Moscow’s conflict with foreign technology companies has been ongoing for years, especially over rules on data storage and content control. However, tensions rose sharply after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Critics say the Kremlin is using these measures to tighten its hold over the online environment and limit foreign influence.

Push for a State-Run Messaging Platform

President Vladimir Putin has endorsed creating a government-controlled messaging service that connects with official portals. Officials call this move part of “digital sovereignty,” aimed at boosting domestic technology and reducing reliance on foreign apps.

WhatsApp Responds

WhatsApp rejected the accusations and defended its privacy policy. “WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people’s right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people,” the platform said.

It added, “We will keep doing all we can to make end-to-end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including in Russia.”

Telegram Highlights Moderation Efforts

Telegram also defended its approach. The platform said its moderators use AI tools to monitor public channels and delete large amounts of harmful material every day.

“Telegram actively combats harmful use of its platform including calls for sabotage or violence and fraud,” the company said.
