Former First Lady Michelle Obama has said that the US is still unprepared to elect a woman president. Her comments come after two major Democratic women leaders—former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton—failed in their presidential attempts.
While speaking at an event, Obama explained that the country has not created enough opportunities or acceptance for women in the highest political role. “As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” she said.
“We Got a Lot of Growing Up to Do”
During a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross to promote her new book, Obama repeated her concern, “As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready. We got a lot of growing up to do and there’s still … a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman and we saw it."
Her remarks highlight what she sees as deep cultural and political resistance within the country, especially among male voters.
Calls for Her Presidential Run Persist
Michelle Obama remains one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party. Because of her popularity, her name resurfaces before every election cycle, with many urging her to run for president.
However, she has repeatedly denied any interest. In 2016, ahead of the Trump–Clinton contest, she said, “I will not run for president. No, nope, not going to do it.”
Speculation returned during the 2024 presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, especially after voter dissatisfaction with Biden and Kamala Harris emerging as the leading Democratic candidate.
Obama’s Support for Harris in 2024
Michelle Obama campaigned for Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. At a Michigan rally, she warned that Donald Trump posed a serious threat, particularly to women’s rights and healthcare.
She urged voters to stay alert, “Please, please do not hand our fates over to the likes of Trump, who knows nothing about us, who has shown deep contempt for us. Because a vote for him is a vote against us, against our health, against our worth,” she said.
