As a result, CSK will begin their campaign without their experienced wicketkeeper-batter.
CSK Face Busy Opening Schedule
CSK will kick off their season on Monday against Rajasthan Royals. They will then play against Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals during the first two weeks.
Therefore, Dhoni’s absence could impact the team during a crucial early phase of the tournament.
Sanju Samson Likely to Take Over Wicketkeeping
In Dhoni’s absence, Sanju Samson is the leading candidate to handle wicketkeeping duties. He is also expected to open the batting alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
However, CSK also have backup options in Urvil Patel and newcomer Kartik Sharma.
Samson joined CSK from Rajasthan Royals in a major trade that saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, the franchise invested ₹14.20 crore in Kartik Sharma, who impressed in domestic cricket with his aggressive batting. Urvil Patel also remains in the squad after a strong strike rate of 212.50 in limited appearances last season.
Dhoni’s Role Last Season
Dhoni featured in all 14 matches last season. He usually batted lower down the order and came in during the final overs. He scored 196 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17, with a highest score of 30 not out.
CSK Look to Bounce Back
CSK had a disappointing IPL 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins. Therefore, the team will aim to improve its performance this year despite early setbacks.
Injury Setbacks Continue for CSK
Earlier, CSK also lost Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The team has replaced him with Spencer Johnson.
The pace attack will now be led by Matt Henry, along with players like Khaleel Ahmed, Gurjapneet Singh, Zak Foulkes, Anshul Kamboj, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Jamie Overton, and Mukesh Choudhary. Batting all-rounder Shivam Dube will also play a key role.
