IPL 2026: Punjab Kings Pull Off Big Chase to Outclass Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk
Punjab Kings chase down 209 with ease as Arya, Iyer, and Mhatre shine to seal a five-wicket win over CSK with eight balls to spare.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) outclassed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets, with eight balls to spare, in the seventh match of IPL 2026 at MA Chidambaram Stadium. After being invited to bat first, CSK posted 209/5 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Ayush Mhatre played a blazing knock of 73 runs off 43 balls. A quick innings from Shivam Dube and a fiery finish by Sarfaraz Khan helped CSK cross the 200-run mark. Vijaykumar Vyshak (2/38 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Punjab Kings.

In reply, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh gave Punjab Kings a flying start and built a strong foundation for the chase. They added 61 runs for the first wicket in just 4.2 overs before Arya was dismissed in the fifth over. After that, Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly carried the innings forward while maintaining the required run rate. Shreyas Iyer then played a brilliant knock of 52 runs off just 29 balls to bring Punjab Kings closer to the target.

Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis finished the match in style, with eight balls remaining. Anshul Kamboj (2/43 in 3.4 overs) was the most successful bowler for CSK. The combined effort by Punjab Kings helped them successfully chase a big total like this.

CSK Struggle Despite Strong Conditions

CSK have now lost both their matches this season. This defeat will hurt more because the conditions were in their favour.

Their batting line-up is strong, especially the top five. The pitch allowed players to play freely and hit through the line, which usually suits CSK. However, even after scoring 209 for 5, their bowling unit could not defend the total.

PBKS also extended their dominance at Chepauk, recording their fourth straight win against CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Ayush Mhatre Shines After Change in Role

Ayush Mhatre, just 18 years old, delivered a standout performance. Last season, he had impressed after joining mid-way and looked settled in the team. But with Sanju Samson joining, Mhatre was pushed down from opener to No. 3.

Samson has struggled so far with two low scores. This meant Mhatre got to bat during the powerplay in this match. With fewer fielders outside the circle, he played freely and attacked the bowlers.

One of his best shots was a powerful forehand-style hit across the line against Vyshak Vijaykumar.

Hard Work Pays Off for Mhatre

In the previous match, Mhatre got out while attempting a pull shot. After that, he worked hard in practice with Mike Hussey. He repeatedly faced short balls and focused on improving his swivel-pull shot.

This effort showed results. He hit three boundaries in a row, including a confident swivel-pull. The first two shots were against full-length deliveries, which forced bowler Xavier Bartlett to change his length. Mhatre then took advantage of that adjustment.

Smart Shot-Making Under Pressure

As the innings moved forward and field restrictions were lifted, PBKS bowlers used wide yorkers to slow down scoring. Shivam Dube, for example, struggled and was at 14 off 14 balls at one stage.

Mhatre, however, adapted well. In the 10th over, he managed a single off a tough ball. But just a few deliveries later, he adjusted his technique. He brought his bat down as before but opened the face at the last moment. This helped him guide the ball past fielders for a boundary.

It was a clever shot that showed both quick thinking and perfect timing.

Mhatre also got lucky. He was dropped twice—once on 59 and again on 67. He finally got out after scoring 73 runs off 43 balls. At that time, the batter at the other end had made only 38 runs from 32 balls, while extras added 12 runs.

Sarfaraz Khan Provides Explosive Finish

After Mhatre’s dismissal, PBKS briefly gained momentum by taking three wickets for 20 runs in three overs. During this phase, CSK’s expected total dropped from 200 to 185. CSK’s middle-order has been a concern, especially with Dewald Brevis injured. However, Sarfaraz Khan changed that impression with a brilliant cameo.

Sarfaraz, known for his domestic cricket success, showed his experience. Having started young in the IPL alongside players like Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle, he looked confident and composed. One of his most remarkable shots came off a bouncer. It looked like he would leave the ball, but at the last moment, he lifted his bat and sent it over the wicketkeeper for six. He also scored multiple boundaries to the third-man region using clever deflections. These shots came off well-executed deliveries like yorkers and tight lines.

Sarfaraz scored 32 runs off just 12 balls and helped CSK reach 209 for 5. This was the first 200-plus total at Chepauk in the IPL since April 2024.

Arya’s Blazing Knock Steals the Show

The match featured several quick cameos, but Priyansh Arya stood out. He smashed 39 runs off just 11 balls, surpassing even Sarfaraz’s effort.

PBKS assistant coach Brad Haddin revealed that Arya had impressed the coaching staff during practice before IPL 2025. His bat speed was exceptional. What impressed even more was how he improved further before this season.

Arya had scored a century against CSK last year. This time, he needed only 11 balls to cause similar damage.

One of his best shots was a stylish cover drive played on the rise, with almost no follow-through. It clearly showed that CSK’s bowling was not up to the mark.

PBKS reached their fifty in just four overs and scored over 30% of the target during the powerplay itself.

Shreyas Iyer Seals the Chase

CSK bowlers created a brief moment of pressure between the ninth and 12th overs. PBKS lost Prabhsimran Singh to a run-out and Cooper Connolly to a full toss.

At the start of the 13th over, PBKS had only a 45% chance of winning, according to forecasts. CSK brought in Rahul Chahar to build on that momentum.

However, Shreyas Iyer quickly turned the game around. He hit two sixes in the over and moved from 4 off 5 balls to 19 off 10. This shifted the momentum instantly. PBKS’ chances of winning jumped to 65% and soon reached 100%.

Shreyas continued his aggressive batting and completed his half-century in just 26 balls, guiding PBKS to another famous chase.

Player of the Match: Priyansh Arya

Punjab Kings (PBKS) once again showed why they are considered masters of chasing big totals in the IPL. Before this match, they had already completed eight successful chases of 200-plus scores. On Friday night, they added another to that list. Priyansh Arya and Shreyas Iyer led the charge with aggressive batting and completely dismantled the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowling attack.

Arya came out attacking from the first ball. He raced to 33 runs off just 9 deliveries as PBKS reached their fifty in only the fourth over. Meanwhile, Shreyas started slowly with 4 runs from 5 balls but quickly picked up pace. He reached his half-century in just 26 balls. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
