Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) outclassed Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs in the 20th match of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium. After being invited to bat first, RCB posted 240/4 in 20 overs. Phil Salt added a quickfire 120-run partnership for the first wicket with Virat Kohli in 10.5 overs. Salt played a blazing knock of 78 runs off 36 balls, while Kohli scored 50 off 38 balls. Rajat Patidar also chipped in with a quickfire fifty.
Shardul Thakur (1/32 in 2.5 overs) had the best figures among the Mumbai Indians bowlers, while Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, and Mitchell Santner took one wicket each.
In the chase, Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma gave Mumbai Indians a blazing start. After Rohit Sharma retired hurt, Mumbai Indians kept scoring and tried hard to maintain momentum but lost wickets at crucial stages. Sherfane Rutherford played an explosive knock of 71 runs off just 31 balls, and Hardik Pandya also tried hard, but their efforts fell short. Suyash Sharma (2/47 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for RCB.
In the end, Mumbai Indians lost the match by 18 runs. With this win, RCB returned to winning ways, while Mumbai Indians suffered their third loss in four matches.
Salt and Patidar Power RCB’s Big Total
Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar led the charge with explosive batting. Salt scored 78 off 36 balls, while Patidar smashed 53 off just 20 balls, marking his fastest fifty.
Both batters dominated the bowlers. Each of them hit a hat-trick of sixes, and Salt also struck three consecutive fours. Together, they smashed 11 sixes and 10 fours, energising the crowd even at Mumbai Indians’ home ground.
Their aggressive batting made up for Virat Kohli’s slower innings. Kohli scored 50 off 38 balls but did not look fully satisfied, especially as runs flowed quickly from the other end.
RCB Spinners Take Control in Second Innings
In the second half, Kohli had little to worry about. RCB’s spinners controlled the game brilliantly.
Suyash Sharma made an immediate impact. He dismissed the dangerous Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in his first over. Krunal Pandya supported him well, giving away just 26 runs in four overs and taking the key wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.
RCB’s spinners bowled eight overs for 73 runs and picked up three crucial wickets. In comparison, MI’s spinners conceded 83 runs in six overs, which hurt their chances.
Salt Leads Early Attack
RCB started aggressively. Kohli hit a six in the first over, but Salt took charge soon after. Salt scored 47 runs off just 22 balls in the powerplay. He attacked Mitchell Santner, hitting him for three sixes and a four in one over. Even when MI brought in Jasprit Bumrah early, RCB still reached 71 runs in the powerplay.
MI Struggle to Contain RCB Batters
Mumbai Indians tried different bowling options, including leg-spinner Mayank Markande. However, he could not get much turn from the pitch. Salt dominated him as well, hitting three consecutive fours. Whenever Markande tossed the ball up, Salt looked ready to hit it for a six.
Shardul Thakur finally provided some relief. He bowled wide yorkers to slow down Kohli and dismissed Salt, who was caught at extra cover.
Patidar Keeps the Momentum Going
At a crucial stage, RCB captain Rajat Patidar came in and kept the pressure on MI. Despite MI’s hopes of making a comeback, Patidar attacked immediately. He hit a four off his first ball. Soon after, he targeted Markande and smashed three consecutive sixes, including a reverse sweep.
Thakur struggled badly in his next over. His deliveries missed their mark, and Patidar punished him. The over went for 23 runs, pushing RCB to 167 for 1 in just 13 overs.
RCB Finish Strong Despite Minor Slowdown
RCB had a chance to push the score even higher, but Kohli found it difficult to hit boundaries. He struggled against Santner, who eventually dismissed Patidar. Jasprit Bumrah bowled well at the death, finishing with 35 runs in four overs. However, he remained wicketless for the fifth straight IPL match.
Tim David’s quick 34 off 16 balls helped RCB maintain a strong scoring rate and finish with a massive total.
MI Start Fast but Lose Grip
Mumbai Indians began their chase strongly. Ryan Rickelton led the charge as MI reached 39 without loss in three overs and 48 in four overs. However, the game changed after Krunal Pandya came into the attack. He bowled tightly and increased the required run rate.
Rohit Sharma then left the field due to what looked like a hamstring injury. At 72 for no loss in seven overs, MI already needed a high run rate.
Suyash Breaks MI’s Momentum
Suyash Sharma turned the match in RCB’s favour. He dismissed Rickelton with a clever delivery and later got Tilak Varma out with another variation. Hardik Pandya tried to fight back with a six off his first ball. Still, the required run rate kept climbing.
Krunal Seals the Game
Krunal Pandya controlled the final phase of the innings. He bowled smartly against his brother Hardik Pandya and kept things tight. He also dismissed Suryakumar Yadav with a slower delivery. Although Suryakumar scored at a strike rate of 150, it was not enough for MI.
At that point, MI needed 120 runs from just 46 balls. The target became unrealistic as the required rate crossed three runs per ball.
Sherfane Rutherford played a fighting knock of 71 off 31 balls, but it only reduced the margin of defeat.
Brief Scorecard
At the Wankhede Stadium, the toss often plays a big role in night matches. The pitch is flat, and dew later in the game helps the chasing team. Despite this, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lost the toss. However, they responded in the best possible way. They posted 240 runs—the highest IPL total at this venue—and then defended it with ease. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
