Himanta Biswa Sarma Set for Second Term as Assam CM After NDA’s Big Win
Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to return as Assam Chief Minister for a second term after the BJP-led NDA secured a sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislature party in Assam is scheduled to meet on May 10 to officially elect its leader and finalise the new cabinet before the swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati on May 12, according to multiple reports.

Incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to return for a second straight term after the BJP-led NDA secured a massive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

NDA Registers Massive Victory in Assam

The BJP delivered its strongest performance in Assam so far by winning 82 seats on its own in the 126-member Assembly. In the 2021 elections, the party had secured 60 seats.

Alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) won 10 seats each, taking the NDA’s total tally to 102 seats. Meanwhile, Indian National Congress suffered a major setback despite leading a broader opposition alliance and managed to win only 19 seats. The result marks the BJP’s third consecutive term in Assam and highlights the party’s growing dominance in the northeastern state.

Sarma Emerges as BJP’s Strongest Face in Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who became chief minister in May 2021 after the BJP retained power in the state, has emerged as the party’s most influential leader in Assam politics over the last five years.

Under his leadership, the BJP significantly expanded its organisational network across Upper Assam, Barak Valley, and the Bodoland regions. The party also focused heavily on welfare schemes and infrastructure-based campaigning during the elections.

BJP Observers To Attend Legislature Party Meeting

The BJP legislature party meeting will be held in the presence of senior party observers JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini. After the meeting, NDA legislators are expected to meet the Governor and formally stake claim to form the next government in the state.

Reports also suggest that discussions over the new cabinet are underway, with alliance partners AGP and BPF likely to receive representation in the ministry.

Grand Swearing-In Ceremony Planned in Guwahati

The swearing-in ceremony on May 12 is expected to witness the presence of several senior BJP leaders, chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, and party workers from different parts of Assam. Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma taking oath for a second term as chief minister, a new council of ministers is also expected to be sworn in.

The BJP is likely to maintain a balance of regional, ethnic, and alliance representation while forming the new cabinet.
