Pakistan-Led Mediation Brings US and Iran Closer to Agreement
A possible US-Iran agreement featuring a ceasefire, sanctions relief and navigation guarantees could be announced soon after Pakistan-led mediation talks.

A final draft of a possible agreement between the United States and Iran could be announced within hours, according to reports by Al Arabiya. Sources familiar with the negotiations said the proposed agreement includes an immediate, comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire across all fronts. The draft also reportedly guarantees freedom of navigation through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Officials said both countries are expected to make simultaneous announcements before the agreement formally comes into effect.

Ceasefire and navigation guarantees part of draft

According to sources, the proposed deal contains several major commitments aimed at reducing tensions in the region. The agreement reportedly includes a pledge from both sides not to target military, civilian or economic infrastructure.

It also calls for an end to all military operations and a halt to media campaigns between the two countries. In addition, the draft includes commitments to respect sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

The proposal further guarantees freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Sources added that the agreement would create a joint mechanism to monitor implementation and resolve disputes between the two sides.

The draft also proposes that negotiations on unresolved issues should begin within seven days of the agreement taking effect.

Sanctions relief linked to Iranian commitments

The reported deal also includes a plan for the United States to gradually lift sanctions on Iran. In return, Iran would commit to following the terms outlined in the agreement. The proposed sanctions relief is being viewed as a key part of efforts to stabilise relations and reduce regional tensions.

Pakistan playing major mediation role

Pakistan has reportedly played a central role in facilitating talks between Washington and Tehran. According to Al Arabiya, Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir has now departed for Tehran as part of the mediation effort.

The report stated that his visit was linked to the finalisation of terms during discussions between Pakistani Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi and Iranian officials.

Naqvi arrived in Tehran earlier on Friday for another round of talks. It marked his second visit to Iran this week.

Iranian state media reported that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts were focused on improving communication channels and helping both sides reach a framework to end the conflict.

Signs of progress in negotiations

The latest developments came after several indications that negotiations were moving forward. Earlier this week, Marco Rubio said there had been “some good signs” during the talks.

At the same time, a senior Iranian source told Reuters that the latest proposal from the United States had helped narrow some of the remaining differences. During his previous visit to Iran, Naqvi reportedly shared the latest American proposal with Iranian officials as part of Pakistan’s ongoing shuttle diplomacy efforts.

Pakistan had earlier been credited as a major force behind last month’s ceasefire efforts in the region.
