Samarth Singh, the absconding husband of Twisha Sharma, was taken into custody by Bhopal Police on Friday in connection with the alleged dowry harassment and death case.
Earlier in the day, Singh had reached the Jabalpur district court to surrender, according to his lawyer. Visuals showed him arriving at the court wearing a cap, sunglasses, a face mask and a gamcha to cover his identity.
However, the court directed him to surrender before the appropriate court that has jurisdiction over the matter. The development came nearly an hour after Singh withdrew his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Court orders second post-mortem
In a major development, the court accepted Twisha Sharma’s family’s request for a second post-mortem examination. The fresh autopsy will now be conducted by a team of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi.
Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh clarified that the examination would take place in Bhopal. Authorities are arranging a special flight to bring the AIIMS medical team to the city.
The earlier post-mortem report had stated that Twisha died due to “antemortem hanging by ligature.” The report also mentioned multiple simple injuries caused by blunt force on different parts of her body.
Samarth Singh withdraws bail plea
Samarth Singh’s lawyer, Jaydeep Kaurav, said his client withdrew the anticipatory bail plea from the High Court. The application had been filed after a lower court rejected his bail request last week.
Following the withdrawal of the plea, legal pressure on Singh increased, leading to his appearance at the Jabalpur court.
CBI takes over investigation
In another key development, the Madhya Pradesh government has handed over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation. According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the probe related to Crime No. 133/2026 registered at Katara Hills Police Station in Bhopal has officially been transferred to the CBI.
The decision came amid growing public attention and demands for a detailed investigation into the alleged dowry death.
Notice issued to former judge Giribala Singh
The High Court also issued a notice to Giribala Singh, Twisha’s mother-in-law and a former judge. She has been named as an accused in the case along with Samarth Singh.
The notice came after Twisha’s father and the state government filed pleas seeking cancellation of her anticipatory bail. Police had earlier issued a third and final notice to Giribala Singh on Thursday for recording her statement.
What happened in the case?
Twisha Sharma, originally from Noida in Uttar Pradesh, was found dead on May 12 at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Bagh Mugalia Extension area.
Her family alleged foul play and pointed to injury marks found on her body. Relatives also claimed that Twisha had earlier told them her husband physically assaulted her. She had married Samarth Singh, a resident of Bhopal, in December 2025.
