UK to Lead Major European Meeting on Ukraine War Amid Rising Tensions
European leaders led by UK PM Keir Starmer are set to meet in London to reaffirm support for Ukraine as Russia rejects direct peace talks and battlefield tensions continue to escalate.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host a major diplomatic meeting in London with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and top European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to The Guardian, the leaders will meet in person to reinforce unified European support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy will travel to the UK alongside Macron and Merz after a week marked by rising military escalation and intensified attacks across the region.

Putin Rejects Direct Talks With Zelenskyy as Tensions Rise

At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal for direct face-to-face peace talks aimed at ending the prolonged conflict.

He said he sees “no point” in such discussions, a move that has further strained diplomatic efforts. As a result, attempts to restart meaningful negotiations continue to stall despite international pressure.

Western Allies Reaffirm Strong Support for Ukraine

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and France continue to stand firmly with Ukraine as key allies since the start of the war. Both nations have also expressed readiness to offer long-term security guarantees as part of any future peace agreement.

In addition, Ukraine recently launched a large-scale drone strike targeting Russia’s St Petersburg. However, authorities reported no immediate casualties from the attack.

Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk Region

At the same time, violence escalated on Ukrainian territory. One person was killed and three others were injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region overnight after Russian forces carried out nearly 30 drone and artillery strikes across three districts, according to regional official Oleksandr Hanzha. Consequently, the latest attacks underline how the war continues to intensify on both sides.

Peace Efforts Stall as War Escalation Continues

Furthermore, the latest escalation follows Putin’s refusal on Friday to engage in direct negotiations with Zelenskyy. He again stated there was “no point” in holding a meeting, despite growing international calls for dialogue.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said such a meeting would be “great,” although his attention has largely shifted toward diplomatic discussions involving Iran.

Earlier this week, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned Russia’s renewed attacks on Ukraine during a call with Zelenskyy. That strike killed one person and injured 15 others, including children, as Ukraine continued to defend itself against widespread drone attacks.

UK Deepens Defence Cooperation With European Partners

Separately, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently strengthened defence ties with Poland by signing a new security agreement with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

He described the deal as a “generational uplift” in defence cooperation, highlighting growing concerns over Russian aggression.

Starmer stated, “There’s no greater challenge for either of our countries than the challenge of Russian aggression, and we see that not just in Ukraine itself, but beyond Ukraine, impacting on our own countries."

He further added, “So, that’s the context in which we sign what is actually a generational uplift in the relationship on security and defence between our two countries."
