India crushed Zimbabwe by 90 runs in the second T20I of the three match series in Harare. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and chose to bowl first. Although India lost two early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma scored attacking half-centuries to power the visitors to 219/5. In reply, Zimbabwe never recovered from the early setbacks and fell well short of the target despite Brian Bennett's fighting 32.
India Lose Early Wickets Before Kishan Steadies the Innings
India's innings started aggressively. Abhishek Sharma hit Sikandar Raza for two consecutive boundaries but failed to build on the start. He chipped a simple catch to point and departed for 8.
Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also attacked from the beginning. He moved across the crease to pull short deliveries and loft full balls over the infield. He hammered left-arm pacer Richard Ngarava for 4, 4, 6, 4 in a single over.
However, Ngarava stayed with the short-ball plan. His persistence paid off when Sooryavanshi mistimed a pull shot to mid-on. India slipped to 29/2 after three overs.
Ishan Kishan Leads the Recovery
After the early blows, Ishan Kishan took control of the innings. He punished the fast bowlers with powerful pull shots and found regular boundaries between deep midwicket and deep square leg. Once Zimbabwe introduced spin, Kishan expanded his strokeplay. He drove elegantly through the covers and guided the ball behind square with soft hands.
Kishan dominated a 66-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer. Iyer looked comfortable but fell after cutting the ball straight to backward point. Kishan reached his fifty in just 31 balls. He then shifted gears. He launched his first six off Brad Evans before taking Sikandar Raza apart in the 15th over. The left-hander smashed 21 runs from the over. He used the depth of the crease to pull short deliveries and stepped out confidently to hit a huge six over deep midwicket.
Tilak Varma Finishes Strong
While Kishan attacked from one end, Tilak Varma built his innings smartly. He started confidently by sweeping his second ball for four. From the beginning, Tilak looked positive and even attempted a scoop shot against Blessing Muzarabani. His off-side batting stood out throughout the innings. He repeatedly used Zimbabwe's pace to find gaps behind point.
Tilak collected three consecutive boundaries off Muzarabani in the 14th over to race to 23 from just 12 balls. When Zimbabwe's bowlers adjusted their lines, Tilak responded by moving across the crease and hitting powerful shots over long-on and cow corner. His best shot came against Richard Ngarava. Instead of shuffling across, he stayed still, cleared his front leg and launched the ball over long-on for six.
One delivery later, Tilak completed a brilliant half-century in only 23 balls. Rinku Singh also provided late fireworks as India scored 31 runs in the final three overs to finish with an imposing 219/5.
Bennett Fights Alone for Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe needed a flying start but almost lost Brian Bennett in the opening over. He edged a delivery through to Ishan Kishan, but no Indian player appealed. Soon after, Tilak Varma dropped a straightforward catch at extra cover to give Bennett another life.
Bennett made India pay by scoring 32 quick runs. However, debutant Yash Thakur eventually dismissed him with a clever slower ball that forced a mistimed scoop into Kishan's gloves. Thakur later removed Tadiwanashe Marumani with a well-disguised off-cutter to keep India firmly on top.
Prince Yadav Injured After Brilliant Spell
India suffered an injury scare when fast bowler Prince Yadav pulled up with a suspected left hamstring injury. Before leaving the field, he made an excellent impact.
He dismissed Ben Curran with his very first delivery after forcing an outside edge to deep third. Soon after, he removed Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, who edged a hard-length delivery while attempting an attacking drive. Prince finished with outstanding figures of 2/10 in 1.2 overs before walking off injured. He did not return to bowl again.
Abhishek Sharma Stars With the Ball
Prince's injury forced India to use several bowling options. In total, the visitors rotated seven bowlers during Zimbabwe's chase. Abhishek Sharma made the most of the opportunity.
Zimbabwe's batters continued to attack but repeatedly found fielders in the deep. Abhishek picked up 3/17, helping India wrap up the innings comfortably. Although he could not make a big contribution with the bat, he finished the match with an impressive bowling performance.
