Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticised the Opposition in Parliament on Tuesday for raising doubts about the timing of Operation Mahadev. This operation led to the killing of three Pakistani terrorists linked to the Pahalgam terror attack in April.
Several Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, questioned why the encounter happened now. Yadav said, “Why am I not congratulating you on Operation Mahadev? All political parties had extended support to the government when the time was right. After all, why did the encounter happen yesterday?”
Modi’s Sharp Response in Parliament
In response, PM Modi mocked the Opposition’s line of questioning. He said, “What is wrong with these people? A disappointment to this extent? For the past many weeks, there were questions like 'what about Pahalgam terrorists', but now, they are questioning the timing of the operation.”
He further ridiculed the criticism by asking sarcastically if the government should have waited for a religiously significant date. “Did we need to wait for 'saawan ka somwar' to carry out Operation Sindoor?” he asked.
Congress Under Fire Over Pakistan Remarks
PM Modi also took aim at the Congress party, accusing it of siding with Pakistan. He referred to the party's doubts about whether the terrorists were actually from Pakistan.
“The country is surprised that Congress has given a clean chit to Pakistan. They are saying that the terrorists of Pahalgam were from Pakistan. Give us proof of this. Pakistan is also demanding the same thing that Congress is making...” the Prime Minister said.
Details of Operation Mahadev
Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament about the success of the joint operation. He said that three terrorists—Suleman, Afghan, and Jibran—were neutralised in the encounter. All were linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based terror group.
The operation was a combined effort by the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Jammu and Kashmir Police. It took place over three months after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians.
“In a joint Operation Mahadev, the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police have neutralised three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack,” said Amit Shah.
