Canada and Indonesia Sign Historic Free Trade and Defense Deal
Canada and Indonesia have signed a historic trade and defense agreement, boosting exports while strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Canada recently signed a bilateral free trade agreement with Indonesia. Consequently, the deal removes or reduces tariffs on over 95 percent of Canadian exports to Indonesia. Prime Minister Mark Carney said, “This is the right deal at the right time with the right partner.” Moreover, he highlighted that Indonesia is Canada’s largest market in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia Hails Agreement

Meanwhile, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called the deal a “historic moment.” During his visit to Ottawa, he noted that it is the first agreement of its kind with an ASEAN member country. Furthermore, he added, “I’m very lucky to be the Indonesian president who brings this back to Indonesia.”

Boosting Trade and Exports

Canada exports wheat, potash, timber, and soybeans to Indonesia. In addition, the CEPA will expand Canadian access to Indonesia’s market. Likewise, Canada will remove more than 90 percent of tariffs on Indonesian goods, which will benefit exports of garments and leather products to North America.

Strategic Move During Global Economic Tensions

Experts say the agreement comes amid global economic turmoil. As a result of rising US protectionism, uncertainty has intensified. Moreover, the deal supports Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, first introduced under Justin Trudeau.

Defense Cooperation Strengthened

Furthermore, Canada and Indonesia signed a defense agreement covering military training, maritime security, cyber defense, and peacekeeping. This agreement not only strengthens security ties but also enhances bilateral cooperation beyond trade.

Why the Deal Matters

Overall, the agreements increase trade opportunities while boosting regional security cooperation. They also mark a milestone in Canada-ASEAN relations. By combining economic growth with strategic collaboration, the partnership sets a precedent for future regional engagement.
