NASA and ISRO’s $1.3 Billion NISAR Satellite Sends First Images from Space
NASA’s new Earth-mapping satellite, NISAR, has released its first detailed radar images of Maine and North Dakota, marking a major step in global disaster monitoring.

NASA has shared the first radar images from its latest Earth-mapping satellite, revealing the coast of Maine and farmlands in North Dakota with stunning clarity.

Joint US-India Mission

The images, released on Thursday, come from a spacecraft launched into orbit from India two months ago. The mission is a collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Valued at $1.3 billion, the project aims to monitor nearly all of Earth’s land and ice masses repeatedly.

Purpose and Benefits

By detecting even the smallest movements in land and ice, the satellite will help experts predict and manage natural disasters. According to NASA, this technology will support forecasters and emergency responders in dealing with floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, and other hazards. Officials described these first photos as a preview of the detailed data expected once scientific operations begin in November.

About the Satellite

The spacecraft orbits 464 miles (747 kilometers) above Earth in a near-polar path. It is named NISAR, short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar. NASA said this advanced satellite will deliver frequent and precise updates about the planet’s surface, making it one of the most important Earth-observing missions to date.
