California has officially declared Diwali a state holiday. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill, marking a historic decision that drew praise from the Indian-American community and lawmakers alike.
Schools and offices to observe Diwali
Under the new law, public schools and community colleges can now close on Diwali. Moreover, state employees can take paid leave to celebrate the festival. This move highlights California’s growing recognition of cultural diversity and inclusion.
Strong bipartisan and community support
Importantly, the Diwali bill — known as AB 268 — received strong bipartisan support and widespread community backing. It was co-sponsored by Assemblymembers Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra. Additionally, advocacy groups such as the Coalition of Hindus of North America played a major role in pushing for the law.
After the bill’s passage, Ash Kalra expressed gratitude on X. He wrote, “Thank you so much @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom and to my Capitol and Judiciary Committee staff who worked tirelessly all year on these important policies that are now state law! More to come!”
Furthermore, Kalra explained the purpose behind the law, saying, “Designating Diwali as an official state holiday will uplift its message to the hundreds of thousands of Californians that celebrate and help introduce it to many throughout our diverse state. Diwali brings communities together with the message of goodwill, peace, and shared sense of renewal. California should embrace Diwali and its diversity, not keep it hidden in darkness.”
A milestone for the West Coast
With this decision, California became the first state on the West Coast to officially recognise Diwali as a public holiday. Previously, states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut had already taken similar steps. Meanwhile, New York City also mandates public school closures during the festival.
Hindu community welcomes the move
Following the governor’s signing, the Hindu community celebrated widely. The Coalition of Hindus of North America stated, “We thank @CAgovernor for recognizing this important festival and ushering in a new era of inclusion for Hindus in California. Huge shout out to Assembly Members Darshana Patel and @Ash_Kalra for sponsoring the bill.”
