French police arrested six people in Lyon after an attempted gold robbery at a metal refinery. The gang tried to enter the refinery using explosives on Thursday, as reported by BBC.
The robbers targeted gold worth $13.8 million. After a police chase, officers caught the suspects and recovered the stolen gold. The incident sparked security fears across France. It also followed another major theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Neighbours Alert Police During the Robbery
Neighbours helped foil the robbery. Videos posted online show two masked men near a white van outside the company. One suspect placed a ladder over the fence and climbed in. Another opened the van’s back door and loaded briefcases.
A neighbour told AFP, “It was really impressive.” She said she heard a loud explosion.
The blast injured five workers from Pourquery Laboratories, the company targeted in the heist. Police said their injuries were minor. Officers have not revealed the suspects’ names but confirmed one woman was among those arrested.
Louvre Heist Connection Raises Alarm
The Lyon attempt came just days after the Louvre Museum robbery. Police have now arrested seven suspects linked to that case.
On October 19, four thieves used a mechanical lift to reach the Gallery of Apollo in broad daylight. They used a disc cutter to open display cases and stole royal jewels worth $102 million. Police caught three of the thieves, but one remains on the run.
Security Tightened After Two Major Heists
These back-to-back robberies have put France on high alert. Authorities increased security at museums, banks, and refineries. Police are investigating if both heists were planned by the same criminal group.
