India on Friday sharply criticized Pakistan after reports suggested it was secretly testing nuclear weapons. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said these alleged activities fit Pakistan’s “history of clandestine and illegal nuclear operations.”
During a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal accused Pakistan of maintaining a troubling record on nuclear issues. “Clandestine and illegal nuclear activities are in keeping with Pakistan’s history, that is centered around decades of smuggling, export control violations, secret partnerships, AQ Khan network and further proliferation,” Jaiswal said.
India Cites Pakistan’s Nuclear Past
Jaiswal said Pakistan’s nuclear history is full of violations and covert deals. He added that India has repeatedly warned the global community about Pakistan’s nuclear record. “We have always drawn the attention of the international community to these aspects of Pakistan’s record,” he noted.
The spokesperson said India had taken note of recent comments by US President Donald Trump regarding Pakistan’s alleged nuclear tests. “In this backdrop, we have taken note of President Trump’s comment about Pakistan’s nuclear testing,” Jaiswal said.
Trump’s Remark Sparks Diplomatic Reaction
Last Sunday, Trump claimed during an interview with CBS News’s 60 Minutes that Pakistan has been secretly conducting underground nuclear tests.
“We’re going to test because they test. And certainly North Korea’s been testing. Pakistan’s been testing. They don’t go and tell you about it. They test way underground, where people don’t know what’s happening. You just feel a little vibration,” Trump said.
He also accused other major powers like Russia and China of conducting similar secret tests.
Pakistan Denies the Allegations
Pakistan quickly rejected Trump’s claim. Its government said the country was not the first to conduct nuclear tests and would not be the first to restart them. “It was not the first to carry out nuclear tests and will not be the first to resume them,” Islamabad’s statement said.
India Highlights Global Security Risks
India’s statement reflected long-standing concerns about Pakistan’s nuclear behavior. New Delhi has often argued that Pakistan’s secret networks and proliferation history pose a major threat to regional and global security.
By linking Trump’s remarks to this pattern, India sought to underline what it views as Pakistan’s lack of transparency in handling nuclear matters.
