Delhi’s acting Chief Minister, Atishi, confirmed the deaths and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. She also offered condolences to the victims' families during this difficult time.

Stampede Happens During Crowded Conditions

The stampede incident occurred at approximately 9:55 PM, when the platform became overcrowded due to delayed and canceled trains. As a result, there was a sudden surge in the crowd, which led to the tragic stampede.

Overcrowding on Platform 14

The crowds gathered at platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express was scheduled to depart. The situation worsened when two other Prayagraj-bound trains were delayed, exacerbating the overcrowding.

CMI Reports Overcrowding

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways), "Every hour, 1,500 general tickets were sold, leading to overcrowding." Consequently, the stampede occurred on platform 14 and near the escalator at platform 16.

Eyewitness Accounts of Chaos

Eyewitnesses reported severe pushing and jostling. Passengers struggled to breathe as the conditions became unbearable due to the packed space.

Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery.”

Railway Minister Orders Inquiry

In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ordered an inquiry into the incident. Furthermore, he dispatched four special trains to help alleviate the crowding at the station.
