‘We’re Challenging Ourselves’: Shreyas Iyer on Punjab Kings Big Chase Win
Punjab Kings chase down another 200-plus total with ease as Priyansh Arya and Shreyas Iyer lead a dominant batting effort.

Punjab Kings once again showed their strength in big run chases. They successfully chased a 200-plus total for the ninth time in IPL history, which is the highest by any team. They defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets with eight balls remaining.

Arya Sets the Tone Early

Priyansh Arya gave Punjab a flying start. He hit a four and a six off the first two legal deliveries of the innings. He dominated the CSK bowlers from the beginning. Arya scored 39 runs off just 11 balls at a strike rate of over 350. His aggressive approach helped Punjab reach their fifty in just four overs.

Shreyas Explains Team Approach

Captain Shreyas Iyer revealed the team’s mindset after the match.

"We've just decided in the dressing room that whatever happens, we are going to play a brand of cricket which is to impress each other, not others outside," Shreyas said. "So that gives us a certain sort of clarity as well, when we approach the game. It is basically challenging each other inside the dressing room, not outside."

Strong Contributions Across Batting Line-Up

Punjab’s chase did not depend on just one player. Their top four batters all made useful contributions, scoring between 36 and 50 runs. Three of them maintained strike rates above 160. Shreyas led the scoring with a well-made 50.

Once the foundation was strong, Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh finished the match comfortably.

"I'm glad that everyone's getting to bat in the first two games itself," Shreyas said. "That gives immense confidence for the team as well. Whenever we're stuck in a pressure situation, people are aware of how to handle them."

CSK Make a Strong Start With the Bat

While chasing, Punjab had earlier allowed CSK to get off to a solid start. Ayush Mhatre led the charge with support from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube. They scored quickly during and after the powerplay.

At one stage, Punjab also risked an over-rate penalty, which could have made things more difficult.

Captain Urges Calm and Discipline

Shreyas admitted that the pitch was very good for batting.

"I think it was a belter to bat on," Shreyas said. "But the way we started was 25 off 3 overs. Suddenly they started picking up from there. But it's important that we remain calm. And also the over rate is something we should look up to right now, because five fielders coming in in the last two overs, you sort of know that there's one line to bowl. That's the only part we need to focus on."
