England Women cruised past New Zealand Women by seven wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series at Derby. After being invited to bat first, New Zealand Women managed to score 136/7 in 20 overs. After losing two early wickets, Sophie Devine played a blazing knock of 45 runs off just 22 balls, which helped New Zealand Women reach a fighting total. Maddy Green and Izzy Sharp also contributed useful runs.
Lauren Bell (2/23 in 4 overs) remained the most successful bowler for England Women, while Charlie Dean also picked up two wickets. Linsey Smith (1/10 in 4 overs) was the most economical bowler for England Women.
While chasing, Bree Illing (2/19 in 4 overs) and Jess Kerr (1/46 in 4 overs) gave early breakthroughs to New Zealand Women. However, Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp guided England Women to victory with 16 balls to spare. Alice Capsey scored a blazing 74 runs off 51 balls, while Freya Kemp added 31 runs off 20 balls. With this win, England Women took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Alice Capsey shines as opener
Capsey, usually a middle-order batter, opened the innings because regular opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge is away on leave following the birth of her first child. The young batter looked comfortable from the start and guided England’s chase brilliantly. She remained unbeaten on 74 from 51 balls, smashing three sixes and seven fours.
Capsey mixed powerful hitting with clever placement and controlled the innings throughout the chase. Sophia Dunkley fell early after mistiming a delivery from Jess Kerr to point. However, Capsey quickly settled in. She hit a huge six over long-on and followed it with boundaries to keep England moving.
Bree Illing later bowled Maia Bouchier to leave England at 39 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. Still, Capsey continued attacking. She reached her half-century from 43 balls and later sealed the victory with consecutive boundaries.
England bowlers dominate New Zealand
England’s bowlers controlled the game from the opening ball. Fast bowler Lauren Bell struck immediately by dismissing Georgia Plimmer with the first ball of the match. Spinner Linsey Smith delivered an outstanding spell. She finished with figures of 1 for 10 from four overs and bowled 15 dot balls. Smith also removed star all-rounder Melie Kerr after Bell completed a sharp overhead catch.
England captain Charlie Dean, leading the side in place of injured skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, also took two wickets. Dean dismissed Izzy Gaze after the batter charged down the pitch trying to break the pressure.
Sophie Devine fights back for New Zealand
Despite New Zealand’s struggles, veteran captain Sophie Devine played an aggressive knock. Devine scored 45 runs from just 22 balls and briefly shifted momentum with powerful hitting.She attacked Sophie Ecclestone for three sixes in one over during the powerplay.
Devine also targeted Freya Kemp, who returned to bowling for the first time in nearly 16 months after recovering from a back injury. Kemp later contributed with the bat as well, remaining unbeaten on 31 from 20 balls during England’s chase.
Devine looked dangerous after racing to 40 from only 18 deliveries. However, Dani Gibson eventually dismissed her with a low delivery that clipped the bails.
England prepare strongly for T20 World Cup
England looked sharp in all departments despite playing their first T20 international in 10 months. The team managed the absence of Nat Sciver-Brunt well and produced a disciplined bowling display against the reigning T20 world champions.
New Zealand struggled for momentum apart from Devine’s counterattack and a late partnership between Maddy Green and Izzy Sharp. Veteran batter Suzie Bates dropped down to No. 9 as New Zealand continued planning for the future beyond her expected retirement after the T20 World Cup. She did not get an opportunity to bat.
