US President Donald Trump, in his first speech to Congress after starting his second term, reinforced his expansionist plans. He declared that the United States would annex Greenland soon.
Military Force Remains an Option
However, Trump warned that if Greenland refused to join willingly, the US might use military force. Since winning the 2024 election, he has aggressively pursued territorial expansion. In addition to Greenland, he aims to annex Canada, the Panama Canal, and the Gaza Strip. Moreover, he plans to remove native populations from Gaza, a move critics call ethnic cleansing.
Trump’s Strong Statements on Annexation
During his speech, Trump addressed Greenland directly, saying, “You will be welcomed into the United States if you choose.” Moments later, he added, “I think we’re going to get it one way or the other. We’re going to get it.”

Previously, Trump had refused to rule out military action. In January, when asked about using force to take Greenland, he responded, “I’m not going to commit to that. It might be that you’ll have to do something. The Panama Canal is vital to our country. We need Greenland for national security purposes.”
Global Leaders Respond
Meanwhile, Trump’s expansionist push has alarmed world leaders. Although he once promised to reduce US military involvement, he now relies on economic pressure and military threats to expand US territory. As a result, Denmark has increased its military budget twice to protect Greenland. Likewise, Canadian leaders from all political parties have strongly condemned Trump’s annexation plans.
