In a post on X, the Prime Minister praised the armed forces for their extraordinary bravery under the toughest conditions.“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, our nation expresses gratitude to the brave soldiers for their extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India,” PM Modi wrote. “Their valour in the face of the most formidable conditions will forever remain a source of national pride. Their unwavering patriotism and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations,” he added.
What Is Kargil Vijay Diwas and Why Is It Celebrated?
India is celebrating the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, which marks the country's victory in the 1999 Kargil War. The day commemorates the success of Operation Vijay, through which Indian Armed Forces recaptured strategic peaks from Pakistani intruders in the Kargil sector. The nation also remembers the 527 soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while defending India's territorial integrity.
Kargil War 1999: A Historic Victory for India
The Kargil War took place between May and July 1999. It remains the only conventional war fought between two nuclear-armed nations. The battles were fought across the difficult mountain regions of Kargil, Dras, Batalik, Mushkoh and Kaksar in Ladakh. Many operations took place at altitudes above 5,000 metres, making the mission extremely challenging.
Despite the harsh terrain and severe weather, Indian troops recaptured all the occupied peaks without crossing the Line of Control (LoC). He described Kargil Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the Indian Army's unmatched courage and extraordinary valour. “‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ stands as a symbol of the Indian Army’s indomitable courage and extraordinary valour. In 1999, despite facing adverse conditions and enemy positions situated at high altitudes amidst the treacherous, snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, our brave soldiers forced the enemy to their knees through ‘Operation Vijay’. On ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’, I pay tribute to all those brave sons who made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold the nation’s integrity,” he wrote.
Rajnath Singh Says Indian Army Is Ready to Face Every Challenge
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras on Saturday. During his address, he said the security challenges faced by India had not disappeared. He added that infiltrators still rely on proxy war and cross-border infiltration. “We have to remember that even today challenges have not reduced; the intent of infiltrators hasn’t changed, and even today it adopts tools like a proxy war or infiltration,” Singh said in an apparent reference to Pakistan. “I am fully assured that our Army is fully prepared for any such challenges,” he added.

Rajnath Singh said the government remains committed to strengthening the armed forces with modern technology, advanced equipment and world-class training. He also praised the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and expressed confidence that the Indian Armed Forces continue to rank among the finest in the world.
