Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed support for the demand to remove Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. However, he emphasized that any action must follow legal protocols, as the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Fadnavis Stresses Legal Constraints
Speaking in Mumbai on Saturday, Fadnavis acknowledged the widespread demand but clarified that the tomb had been designated a protected site during the Congress regime. He stated, "We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site."
BJP Leaders Push for Removal
The demand gained traction after BJP MP Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, urged the removal of the tomb. His statement followed recent controversy over Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi’s remarks praising Aurangzeb.
Additionally, former BJP MP Navneet Rana also demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. She strongly criticized Azmi for glorifying the Mughal ruler.
Controversy Over Abu Azmi’s Remarks
The debate intensified after Abu Azmi claimed that Aurangzeb had built temples and was not a cruel emperor. His statement sparked outrage, leading to his suspension from the Maharashtra legislative assembly until the end of the budget session on March 26.
Growing Political Debate
The call for Aurangzeb’s tomb removal has now become a heated political issue, with BJP leaders advocating for action while the government insists on following legal procedures. The controversy continues to stir discussions across Maharashtra.
