UK Announces New Refugee Routes for India and Six Other Countries to Reduce Illegal Immigration
The UK has announced new legal refugee resettlement routes for seven countries, including India, aiming to provide safe migration pathways while reducing dangerous Channel crossings and illegal immigration.

The United Kingdom has announced new legal pathways for refugees from seven countries, including India, to resettle in Britain. The initiative aims to provide safe routes for people fleeing persecution and conflict while discouraging illegal migration, particularly dangerous crossings of the English Channel in small boats.

Home Office Minister for Border Security and Asylum Anna Turley announced the programme in the House of Commons on Thursday. The seven countries initially covered are India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan and Uganda. Under the eligibility requirements, applicants must be outside their country of nationality and must have registered with the relevant authorities or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in one of these seven countries before October 1, 2026. The first refugees are expected to arrive in Britain under the new arrangements in autumn 2027. "The new routes will enable refugees to come to the UK and provide them with an opportunity for a better life," Turley said. She clarified that the scheme would only support people with genuine protection needs. Applicants must undergo identity verification, security screening and eligibility assessments before receiving refugee status. The government will work with the UNHCR to identify suitable candidates.

Three Pathways Under the New Refugee Scheme

The programme will offer three routes: named community sponsorship, refugee work and refugee study. These pathways will connect refugees with local communities, universities and employers willing to support their resettlement. The government will limit admissions according to the capacity of participating organisations and communities. Turley said the initial number of UNHCR-approved arrivals, including those under the existing UK resettlement programme, would be in the hundreds. This could increase to the low thousands if irregular migration declines.

Applications Open for Sponsorship Organisations

The government has opened applications for organisations seeking accreditation as lead sponsors under the community sponsorship and refugee study pathways. Applications for the refugee work route are expected to begin in spring 2027. Lead sponsors will recruit and guide individual sponsors, assess sponsorship arrangements, submit applications and provide continued assistance to participating groups. Eligible organisations must be registered UK charities or community interest companies with sufficient resources, policies and operational capabilities.

Security Checks Before Arrival

The Home Office will retain responsibility for security screening and final immigration decisions. Selected refugees must complete biometric checks, criminality assessments and health examinations before travelling to Britain. Turley said the initiative reflected Britain's commitment to protecting people escaping war and persecution while fulfilling its international obligations. The government will decide admission numbers based on the ability of sponsors and local communities to accommodate refugees and provide appropriate support after their arrival.
