What is a State Funeral?

In the U.S., a state funeral is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to public life. With the family's permission, these ceremonies usually span several days. Typically, events occur both in the deceased's hometown and Washington, D.C. According to the White House Historical Association, state funerals are "five days long" and "carefully planned." The first state funeral for a president was held in 1841 for William Henry Harrison. In recent history, presidents like Lyndon B. Johnson, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George H.W. Bush had state funerals. However, Richard Nixon's family chose a simpler service instead.

What Happens During State Funerals?

First, the sitting president announces the death with an official proclamation. As a result, flags are lowered to half-mast for 30 days. The Department of Defense then organizes the state funeral. Initially, private ceremonies are held in the president's home state. Afterward, the body is transported to Washington, D.C., where it lies in repose, allowing the public to pay their respects. The casket, given military honors, is placed in the Capitol's Rotunda. Subsequently, a formal service takes place at the Washington National Cathedral. Finally, the president’s body returns to the hometown for burial, often accompanied by a 21-gun salute or a flyover.

Jimmy Carter’s State Funeral

Carter’s funeral rites began on January 4 in Plains, Georgia. A motorcade carried his body through his hometown to the Carter Center in Atlanta for a public service. "Hail to the Chief" played as his body arrived. On January 7, Carter’s remains were flown to Washington with his family. At the U.S. Navy Memorial, a brief ceremony took place before the casket moved to a horse-drawn caisson. Consequently, it traveled to the Capitol, where it now lies in state, guarded by military pallbearers.
