Chennaiyin FC secured their first home win in five games, defeating Punjab FC 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Saturday in the Indian Super League 2024-25 season. This victory followed their morale-boosting win over East Bengal FC.

Early Lead for Chennaiyin FC

Chennaiyin FC made an early impact. In the 19th minute, Wilmar Jordan Gil converted a penalty after Punjab's Melroy Assisi handled the ball in the box. This gave the hosts the lead and set the tone for the game.

Punjab FC's Early Pressure

Despite falling behind, Punjab FC started the match with high intensity. Asmir Suljic had the first opportunity, but his shot went wide. A few minutes later, Mrzljak received a pass from Petros Giakoumakis but couldn’t get past Chennaiyin’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Nawaz.

Missed Opportunities for Punjab

Punjab FC continued to press. In the 37th minute, Ricky Shabong won the ball from Lalrinliana Hnamte and passed it to Mrzljak. However, Mrzljak missed the target. At that point, coach Panagiotis Dilmperis made changes, bringing on Muhammad Suhail and Luka Majcen for Asish Pradhan and Mrzljak.

Chennaiyin FC almost extended their lead just before halftime. Wilmar Jordan Gil set up Irfan Yadwad, who made a brilliant run into the box, but Ravi made an excellent save. Moments later, Punjab FC came close again, but Suhail’s cross went unclaimed in the box.

Second Half Equalizer

After the break, Punjab FC quickly found an equalizer. In the 48th minute, Luka Majcen finished a well-executed give-and-go between Ezequiel Vidal and Asmir Suljic. This goal brought Punjab back into the game.

Chances for Punjab FC

In the 70th minute, Punjab’s Giakoumakis had a golden chance to take the lead, but he missed the target with a header. Despite creating chances, Punjab FC struggled to finish.

Chukwu's Late Winner

With the game looking even, Chennaiyin FC regained the advantage in the 84th minute. Daniel Chima Chukwu, who had come on as a substitute, scored the winner. He slotted home a low cross from Lukas Brambilla, giving Chennaiyin FC a 2-1 lead.

Key Saves by Nawaz

As the game neared its end, Punjab FC threw bodies forward, but Chennaiyin’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Nawaz, kept them at bay. First, he denied Majcen from close range, and then he tipped away a powerful shot from Vidal, preserving the lead for the hosts.

Chukwu’s Impact

Chukwu’s substitution proved decisive. He scored the winning goal and contributed defensively by completing four of his five passes and clearing the ball once. His presence made a big difference in the match.
