Delhi Capitals climbed to the top of the
TATA Women's Premier League 2025 Points Table with a commanding six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. A brilliant bowling effort set the foundation, and a composed chase sealed the win for Meg Lanning’s side.
Bowlers Dominate Early
From the start, Delhi Capitals took control, eager to bounce back from previous losses. Marizanne Kapp (2/17) and Shikha Pandey (2/18) ripped through Gujarat’s top order, restricting them to 127/9.
First, Kapp struck early, dismissing Harleen Deol with a perfect outswinger. Then, in the same over, she trapped debutant Phoebe Litchfield LBW, delivering a double-wicket maiden. Shortly after, Pandey removed Beth Mooney on the first ball of the fifth over, with Niki Prasad taking a sharp catch. Moments later, Pandey and Prasad combined again to dismiss Kashvee Gautam, putting Pandey on a hat-trick.
As a result, by the end of the Powerplay, Gujarat Giants struggled at 31/4, unable to counter DC’s precise swing bowling.
Middle Order Attempts to Rebuild
Despite early setbacks, Gujarat Giants tried to recover. However, Delhi Capitals continued their dominance, restricting the scoring rate.
Titas Sadhu, playing her first game of the season, struck a crucial blow by dismissing Gujarat skipper Ashleigh Gardner (3 off 9) with a sharp inswinger.
Then, Deandra Dottin (26 off 24) fought back, smashing a boundary off Annabel Sutherland. However, Sutherland bowled her soon after, leaving Gujarat at 61/6 after 11 overs.
Next, Bharti Fulmali (40* off 29) and Tanuja Kanwar (16 off 24) launched a recovery. They built a record 51-run partnership—the highest seventh-wicket stand in WPL history. Fulmali showcased her power-hitting skills, striking a six over fine leg and finding boundaries off Jess Jonassen. Meanwhile, Kanwar provided steady support but lost her wicket due to a run-out. In the final over, Fulmali remained unbeaten and hit a boundary on the last ball, pushing Gujarat Giants to 127/9.
Confident Chase Secures Victory
Gujarat Giants started their defense with discipline. Early on, Kashvee Gautam delivered a brilliant inswinger, dismissing Meg Lanning. However, Jess Jonassen arrived at No. 3 and partnered with Shafali Verma to stabilize the innings.
At first, they played cautiously. Then, they shifted gears, scoring 13 runs off Ashleigh Gardner’s final Powerplay over and pushing DC to 46/1. Next, Shafali hammered Priya Mishra for two sixes, bringing up a 50-run stand. She continued attacking, smashing Gardner for a six and a four before falling LBW for 44 off 27 balls.
Even after losing a few wickets, Delhi Capitals stayed in control. Jonassen kept the chase on track, reaching her maiden WPL fifty with a stunning cover drive off Tanuja Kanwar. Despite Gujarat Giants taking two sharp catches to dismiss Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland, DC remained dominant.
Finally, Jonassen stayed unbeaten on 61 off 32 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes. Marizanne Kapp finished the match with a boundary, as Delhi Capitals reached 131/4 in just 15.1 overs.
