England Seal Series with Root’s Blazing 166 in Second ODI at Cardiff
Joe Root’s stunning 166 helped England chase 309 and seal a 3-wicket win over West Indies in the second ODI.

England defeated West Indies by 3 wickets in the second ODI at Cardiff on Sunday. West Indies posted 308 runs on the board, thanks to a brilliant century by Keacy Carty and a blazing half-century by Shai Hope. While chasing, England reached the target comfortably with the help of a superb 166-run knock by Joe Root. Harry Brook and Will Jacks also played useful innings. With this win, England secured a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

West Indies got Early Blow

England won the toss and opted to bowl. West Indies started with Brandon King and Jewel Andrew at the crease. However, Brydon Carse struck early. He removed Jewel Andrew for a duck in the second over.

King and Carty Rebuild with Big Partnership

Despite the early blow, Brandon King and Keacy Carty stabilized the innings. They added a solid 141-run partnership for the second wicket. King played aggressively and reached his half-century. But Adil Rashid broke the stand in the 26th over by dismissing King.

Carty Shines with Century

Carty continued confidently and built another crucial stand with captain Shai Hope. He completed a well-deserved century. However, Will Jacks ended his knock in the 36th over.

Hope Fights as England Wrap Up the Innings

Shai Hope stayed calm and added runs with Justin Greaves. But Jacob Bethell removed Greaves in the 44th over. He made 22 runs off 22 balls. After that, England bowlers dominated. Saqib Mahmood (3/37) and Adil Rashid (4/63) cleaned up the tail quickly. Although Hope resisted with a valiant 78 from 66 balls, Mahmood dismissed him as West Indies folded for 308 in 47.4 overs.

England Lose Openers Early

In reply, England had a shaky start. Jayden Seales removed Jamie Smith in the very first over. Then, Matthew Forde sent back Ben Duckett in the second over. Both openers went back to the pavilion without scoring a run.

Brook and Root Rebuild the Chase

Joe Root and Harry Brook steadied the innings with a rapid 85-run partnership. Brook looked dangerous with his 47 off 36 balls. But Alzarri Joseph ended his innings in the 12th over. Alzarri Joseph also dismissed Jos Buttler for a duck in the 14th over.

Root Anchors with Key Partnerships

Next, Root partnered with Jacob Bethell to add 40 more runs. Roston Chase dismissed Bethell in the 24th over for 17. Even then, Root continued to dominate. He shared a 100-run partnership with Will Jacks, putting England in control.

Joseph Strikes Late but Root Finishes the Job

Alzarri Joseph struck twice again. He dismissed Jacks for 49 in the 44th over and removed Carse for just 2 in the 46th. However, the damage was already done. Joe Root anchored the chase brilliantly with an unbeaten 166. England reached the target in 48.5 overs.
