IPL 2025: Punjab Kings Storm into Final with Five-Wicket Victory Over Mumbai Indians, Shreyas Iyer Steals the Show
Shreyas Iyer's explosive knock powered Punjab Kings to a five-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, securing a spot in the IPL 2025 final.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) outclassed Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets in Qualifier 2, the 73rd match of the IPL 2025 season. The game took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Mumbai Indians posted 203/6 in 20 overs, powered by blazing knocks from Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jonny Bairstow, and Naman Dhir.

While chasing, Trent Boult gave Punjab Kings an early blow. However, a brilliant knock by Shreyas Iyer sealed the victory for PBKS. Josh Inglis and Nehal Wadhera also played valuable innings.

With this win, Punjab Kings advanced to the final and will face RCB on June 3.

Early Blow to Mumbai Indians

Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to bowl. Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow opened the innings for Mumbai Indians. Arshdeep Singh bowled the first over and gave only 4 runs. In the next over, Bairstow hit a six off Kyle Jamieson, bringing 11 runs. Marcus Stoinis started the third over with a boundary but dismissed Rohit Sharma on the next ball. Rohit scored 8 off 7 balls. Tilak Varma came next. He got off the mark with a double and smashed a six off a no-ball. MI reached 30/1 after 3 overs. Arshdeep’s next over saw Bairstow hit two boundaries. MI completed 50 runs in the 5th over bowled by Jamieson. Omarzai conceded a four and six in the 6th over. MI were 65/1 after the powerplay. Bairstow was on 36 off 21, and Tilak was on 14 off 9.

MI Build a Solid Platform

Vyshak Vijaykumar dismissed Bairstow on the last ball of the 7th over. He made 38 off 24. Suryakumar Yadav came to bat. Chahal bowled the 8th over and gave just 3 runs. Tilak smashed a four and six in the 9th over bowled by Vyshak. Chahal’s 10th over saw SKY hit a six and four, bringing MI to 102/2. Omarzai bowled the 11th over, giving away 10 runs. In Chahal’s next over, SKY hit another six. Tilak’s single brought up a 50-run stand between the pair. MI reached 131/2 after 13 overs, as SKY hit two boundaries off Jamieson.

Punjab Strike Back

Chahal removed SKY in the 14th over after he hit a four and six. SKY scored 44 off 26. In the next over, Jamieson dismissed Tilak Varma for 44 off 29 balls. Naman Dhir came in and got off the mark with a single. MI stood at 146/4 after 15 overs. Vyshak’s 16th over saw Naman’s single bring up 150 runs for MI. An overthrow gave Pandya six runs. Arshdeep bowled the 17th, and Naman struck three boundaries. Omarzai bowled the 18th over and dismissed Pandya on the last ball for 15 off 13.

MI Cross 200-Run Mark

In the 19th over, Naman Dhir hit two boundaries off Arshdeep. Omarzai bowled the final over. Naman hit a four but got out for 37 off 18. Raj Angad Bawa hit 5 runs in the last few balls. MI posted 203/6. Bawa remained unbeaten on 8 off 4, Santner on 0 off 1.

Punjab Begin Their Chase

Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh opened for Punjab. Boult gave away only 6 runs in the first over. Topley gave 7 runs in the second. Boult dismissed Prabhsimran in the 3rd over for 6. Josh Inglis came in and hit back-to-back boundaries. PBKS were 21/1 after 3 overs. Topley’s 4th over saw Priyansh score a four and six. Inglis hit 2 fours and 2 sixes off Bumrah in the 5th over. Ashwani Kumar dismissed Priyansh in the 6th over for 20. Iyer and Inglis hit boundaries. PBKS reached 64/2 at the end of the powerplay. Inglis was on 33 off 13, Iyer on 5 off 4.

Mumbai Apply Pressure

Santner bowled a tight 7th over. Pandya removed Inglis in the 8th over for 38. Wadhera came in and hit a boundary in the 9th over. He hit a six off Pandya in the 10th, and Iyer followed with a four. Boult dropped Wadhera, who then hit another boundary. PBKS were 98/3 after 10. Ashwani bowled the 11th over, giving just 3 runs. Bumrah gave away 7 in the 12th. In the 13th, Iyer hit 3 sixes off Topley, bringing up a 50-run stand. PBKS were 128/3.

Iyer Leads the Charge

Wadhera smashed two fours in the 14th over by Boult. Bumrah gave only 5 runs in the 15th. Ashwani started the 16th with a six but removed Wadhera for 48 off 29. Shashank Singh got run out for 2 in the 17th over. Stoinis hit a boundary to start his innings. In the 18th over, Iyer added another four. In the 19th, he exploded. He hit four sixes, crossed 50 in 27 balls, and finished the game in style. Thanks to Iyer’s explosive finish and Wadhera’s supporting knock, Punjab Kings chased down 204 with ease and reached the final.

Rohit Sharma failed to score big today. However, Jonny Bairstow, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma played good knocks. Naman Dhir also played a fiery cameo at the end, helping Mumbai Indians post a total that could be considered competitive in a high-intensity match like this. But what Mumbai Indians truly missed today was the kind of knock Rohit Sharma played in the last match. They fell 30–40 runs short.

While chasing, Punjab Kings also lost an early wicket, but Josh Inglis set the momentum. Then, Nehal Wadhera took the game away from Mumbai Indians, and finally, Shreyas Iyer shut down any doubts by sealing the victory. It was a superb knock by Shreyas Iyer today.
