The European Union took serious diplomatic action after an EU diplomat was reportedly attacked in Vladivostok,
Russia, on May 26. The EU summoned Russia’s representative in Brussels for explanations regarding the incident.
Although the identity and nationality of the victim have not been officially revealed, Der Spiegel, a German news outlet, reported that the victim was a Romanian official posted in Russia’s Far East.
What Happened?
According to Der Spiegel, the woman left her hotel early in the morning for a walk. Suddenly, a car approached her. Two men stepped out, threatened her, and then assaulted her physically.
EU diplomatic sources cited in the report claimed that the attackers were connected to Russian security services.
European Union Condemns the Attack
EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper strongly condemned the incident. “We condemn any violence against EU diplomats. They must be able to carry out their duties free from fear and intimidation,” she said.
She added, “The safety of our staff is paramount, and we will continue to review the protection of our diplomatic staff.”
Russia Asked to Explain
As a result of the incident, Russia’s envoy in Brussels was called in for clarification. The EU has not released further details about the meeting or any response from the Russian side.
Growing Tensions
This incident has added to the growing tensions between the EU and Russia. The assault of a diplomat on official duty could escalate diplomatic disputes and lead to stronger protective measures for EU staff abroad.
