Team India finished third at the Asia Cup. They stood behind the Philippines and Iran. The result marked a major breakthrough for a sport long seen as a male domain. The players reached the podium through hard work and resilience.

From Small Beginnings to Big Dreams

Many players started in simple ways. For example, Diskit C Angmo first watched her brother play hockey. She later recalled, “I didn’t know girls could even play hockey.” That early curiosity grew into a movement of young women from Ladakh challenging old social norms.

Facing Social Resistance

The players faced hostility at times. Team captain Tsewang Chuskit remembers critics in the crowd. “Some uncles in the audience asked, ‘What are you doing playing with the boys? This isn’t a girl’s game.’”
Yet she turned that negativity into motivation. “It became more important to prove the world wrong than to prove myself right,” she said.

Pressure from Home and Society

The resistance extended beyond spectators. Assistant coach Ali Amir noted the common comments the girls heard at home. “They said, ‘you’re a girl, what will you play? You’ll get married, you’ll go to someone else’s house.’” Despite such pressures, the team rose to international competition and brought pride to the country.
