Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets with six balls to spare in the 63rd match of the IPL 2026 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. CSK scored 180/7 in 20 overs after deciding to bat first. Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave CSK a solid start, but the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Samson and Urvil Patel played quick innings but failed to convert their starts into big scores.
Kartik Sharma also contributed with a quick 32 runs off 19 balls. Dewald Brevis emerged as the top scorer for CSK. Pat Cummins was the most successful bowler for SRH and finished with figures of 3/28 in four overs.
During the chase, SRH lost both openers within the first eight overs. However, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen took control of the innings. The duo added 75 runs for the third wicket before Noor Ahmad dismissed Klaasen in the 15th over. Kishan stayed till the later stages of the innings and guided SRH closer to victory before Anshul Kamboj dismissed him in the 19th over. Ravichandran Smaran sealed the win with a boundary on the final ball of the 19th over.
With this victory, SRH qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs. Meanwhile, CSK must win their final league match against Gujarat Titans and depend on other results to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Gaikwad Struggles to Accelerate
Ruturaj Gaikwad once again became the centre of attention because of his slow start. The CSK captain scored only 9 runs from 11 balls during the powerplay. He became just the second batter this season to complete the first six overs without hitting a boundary. Earlier, Arshin Kulkarni had done the same for Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 7.
Gaikwad did not appear out of form. In fact, he remains CSK’s second-highest run scorer this season. However, his cautious approach in the powerplay hurt the team’s momentum.
While most openers attack field restrictions aggressively, Gaikwad preferred to settle in before playing big shots. That old-style approach resulted in only 15 runs from 21 balls, the slowest contribution by an opener when CSK reached 100 runs this season.
Cummins Leads SRH Bowling Effort
Pat Cummins delivered another strong performance for SRH and also completed 200 T20 wickets during the match. Despite bowling on a surface that offered little help to fast bowlers, Cummins finished with figures of 3 for 28 in four overs. He continued his dominance over Sanju Samson and also removed Kartik Sharma and Gaikwad using slower deliveries and smart variations.
Following Cummins’ lead, Sakib Hussain also relied heavily on slower balls. He bowled 18 slower deliveries in his four overs and picked up 2 for 34. The pitch slowed down the pace of the ball and made stroke-making difficult for batters.
Brevis Finally Delivers for CSK
Dewald Brevis finally produced an impactful innings for CSK after struggling for consistency this season. Before this match, Brevis had a strike rate of only 122.22, one of the lowest among batters who had faced at least 50 balls this season.
SRH bowlers controlled the middle overs and allowed only two boundaries between overs nine and 13. At that stage, CSK desperately needed a counterattack. Brevis responded by attacking Nitish Kumar Reddy with a four and a six in the 14th over. He went on to score 44 runs from 27 balls. He handled the slower short balls confidently and regularly targeted the boundary with pull and cut shots.
By the time Eshan Malinga dismissed him in the 18th over, Brevis, Samson and Kartik Sharma had added 103 runs from only 59 balls with 10 fours and seven sixes combined. In comparison, Gaikwad, Urvil Patel and Shivam Dube managed only 54 runs from 52 deliveries.
SRH Chase Faces Early Pressure
The chase began with both teams putting each other under pressure. CSK pace bowlers Spencer Johnson and Mukesh Choudhary consistently bowled above 140 kph and managed to keep Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma relatively quiet.
Akeal Hosein Gives CSK Hope
CSK spinner Akeal Hosein played an important role against SRH’s left-handed batters. During the innings break, CSK coach Stephen Fleming spent time discussing bowling plans with Hosein.
The spinner later removed Abhishek Sharma early in the innings and briefly lifted CSK’s hopes of defending the target.
Klaasen and Kishan Finish the Job
However, Heinrich Klaasen turned the game in SRH’s favour with a brilliant innings against spin bowling. He survived two close chances early in his knock before attacking aggressively. Klaasen smashed boundaries regularly and dominated the spinners despite the slow nature of the pitch.
He scored 47 runs from just 26 balls at a strike rate of 181 and controlled most deliveries he faced. His impact on the match was clear as CSK players celebrated his dismissal aggressively. Alongside him, Ishan Kishan played a mature and composed innings.
Kishan completed his half-century in 37 balls. He stayed patient, avoided risky shots and punished loose deliveries whenever bowlers made mistakes. Although the innings was not flashy, it proved extremely valuable in guiding SRH to victory and sealing their playoff qualification.
