Why Can US Trade With Russia But Others Can’t, Asks China at UN
China strongly defended its trade with Russia at the UN, accusing the US of hypocrisy and urging Washington to stop blaming others while continuing its own dealings with Moscow.

At a recent UN Security Council meeting, China strongly criticized the United States for being hypocritical about trading with Russia during the Ukraine war.

US Accuses, China Responds

The US has repeatedly accused both India and China of supporting Russia by continuing to buy Russian oil, despite the war in Ukraine. However, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, firmly rejected the allegations during the session.

He pointed out that while the US continues trading with Russia, it still questions other countries for doing the same. “The US itself continues to engage in trade with Russia to this day. Why should it be acceptable for the US to do so, but not for others? Isn’t this ‘only allowing oneself to set fires while forbidding others from lighting lamps?’” Geng said.

China Clarifies Its Position

After the UNSC meeting, Geng once again addressed the accusations while speaking to reporters. He made it clear that China did not create the conflict in Ukraine. “I responded to such accusations on multiple occasions in past meetings. Since the US insists on repeating the same rhetoric, I find it necessary to set the record straight once again.” “First, China is not the creator of the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to the conflict. China has never provided lethal weapons to any party involved in the conflict." He added that China tightly controls the export of dual-use goods, including drones. “We have always strictly controlled the export of dual-use items, including drones.”

China Says Trade Is Legal and Balanced

Geng explained that China maintains lawful trade with both Russia and Ukraine, following all international regulations. “China maintains normal trade relations with both Russia and Ukraine, in full compliance with international law and without breaching any international obligations. China’s legitimate and lawful rights and interests must not be infringed upon.”

He also reminded the council that no party involved in the conflict is under UNSC sanctions.

China Warns US Against Double Standards

Geng urged the US to be consistent in its actions. He criticized Washington for asking China to help resolve the war while also attacking China publicly. “Third, the Ukraine crisis is currently at a critical juncture, with a genuine prospect for a political resolution. The US cannot, on the one hand, ask China to play a constructive role in ending the war, while on the other hand, continuously smear and pressure China.”

He concluded by saying the US should avoid playing the blame game.

Tensions Rise Over Oil Trade

This heated exchange came shortly after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Chinese officials about facing steep tariffs if they continued to buy sanctioned Russian oil. In response, China said it would defend its energy sovereignty. At the same time, India is also under pressure from Washington for its ongoing purchases of discounted Russian crude oil.
