Cloudbursts Trap Families in Uttarakhand, Rescue Teams Rush to Scene
Cloudbursts in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts trapped families under debris, prompting urgent rescue efforts.

Cloudbursts struck Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts on Friday. As a result, debris flows trapped several families. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the incident in a post on X.

Disaster in Rudraprayag and Chamoli

The cloudbursts hit Bareth Dungar Tok in Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag and the Deval area of Chamoli. Consequently, mud and debris blocked homes, leaving people stranded.

CM Dhami Orders Rescue

Dhami said rescue teams were working on a war footing. Moreover, he stayed in contact with officials and gave strict orders for fast relief. He wrote, “A distressing report has been received that due to cloudbursts in the Bareth Dungar Tok area under the Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag district and in the Deval area of Chamoli district, some families have been trapped due to debris flow.”

He added, “Relief and rescue operations are underway on a war footing by the local administration. In this regard, I am in constant contact with officials and have issued necessary instructions to the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrates to ensure the effective conduct of rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safe well-being of all.”

Missing People and Loss

Meanwhile, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said two people were missing. He also confirmed that many animals were buried under the debris. In addition, heavy rain blocked several roads. Relief teams soon reached the affected areas to help.

Monsoon Disasters Continue

Cloudbursts and flash floods have repeatedly hit many parts of Uttarakhand since the start of the monsoon.Earlier, on August 26, Dhami asked experts to study the causes of the August 22 disaster in Tharali, Chamoli.

Expert Team to Visit Tharali

State Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman explained that the Chief Minister wanted a detailed survey. Therefore, the study will examine why such disasters keep striking the Himalayas and why large amounts of debris flow with the water.

He added that experts from the Geological Survey of India, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Institute of Hydrology, Uttarakhand Landslide Reduction and Management Centre, Central Water Commission, and the state Irrigation Department will soon visit Tharali.
