‘The world must respond with action, not just words,’ Zelenskyy tells Global Leaders
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the world to impose tougher sanctions on Russia after Moscow launched its largest aerial assault since the war began.
A day after Russia carried out its biggest air attack on Ukraine since the start of the war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to the international community for decisive action. In a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, he stressed that condemning Russia is not enough unless backed by strong measures.

Zelenskyy said sanctions must target both Russia and individuals linked to it. He also supported introducing trade tariffs and other restrictions to hurt Russia’s economy.

“It is important that today we saw a broad response from our partners to this strike. Clearly, Russia is trying to inflict pain on Ukraine with even more brazen attacks. This is a clear sign that Putin is testing the world — whether they will accept or tolerate this,” Zelenskyy wrote.

He added, “That is why statements by state leaders and institutions must be backed by strong actions — sanctions against Russia and individuals connected with Russia, tough tariffs, and other restrictions on trade with Russia. Their losses must be felt. That is what is truly convincing.”

Push for Stronger Military and Economic Measures

The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the need for better long-range strike capabilities. According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin is avoiding negotiations and hiding behind military aggression.

“Putin does not want negotiations; he is clearly hiding from them. Russia’s fuel shortages and other economic troubles are the logical response to its refusal to agree to a ceasefire or a meeting at the leaders’ level,” Zelenskyy stated.

His call for action came shortly after Russia launched a massive overnight attack involving more than 800 drones and 13 missiles, including four ballistic missiles, targeting several Ukrainian cities.

Link to Trump’s New Sanctions

Zelenskyy’s remarks came just hours after US President Donald Trump confirmed he is ready to impose a fresh round of sanctions directly aimed at Russia and Putin.

When asked if he would move forward with such measures, Trump responded, “Yes, I am.”

The Ukrainian president voiced support for Trump’s idea of placing tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Russia. Speaking to ABC News, he said, “It is the right idea to put tariffs on countries that continue to make deals with Russia.”

India and Russia Ties in Spotlight

During the interview, Zelenskyy was asked about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China.

The journalist questioned whether Trump’s plan to impose nearly 50 percent tariffs on India could backfire. In response, Zelenskyy refrained from criticizing the U.S. move but reiterated his call for sanctions against Russia.

Back in July, Trump had announced steep tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil. India defended its position, pointing out that China imports far more oil from Russia than India does.

Rising Tensions in the Ongoing War

As the war intensifies, Zelenskyy’s appeal signals growing urgency for a united global front against Russia. His backing of Trump’s sanctions reflects Ukraine’s need for stronger international measures, both to weaken Russia economically and to deter further attacks.
